I'd say the porn in F/SN made it at least 1 point worse (on a scale from 1 to 10) just because it seemed so forced.

If I was just rating the Fate route, that would be at least 2-3 points worse, it was just atrocious the way it was forced in.

No it isn't. You can have it fit in meaningfully with the plot; even Tsukihime did a much better job than F/SN. Even Ever17's (unshown) sex scene made sense in context.

F/SN basically tried to have a huge overarching plot that didn't involve romance at all--and then shoved romance into it to try to appeal to the hikkis who won't buy any game that doesn't include mollusks.

I think it depends on where the VN is heading. If it is heading in the direction of making a couple, then sex works fine to show how far they have gone as a couple. But you don't really need sex with every character just because you met them.

I'd probably like to play a VN like Shakugan no Shana without porn. But less interested in Lucky Star VN without porn.

You could simply say that porn makes up for lack of plot.

Most sex scenes in eroge are just "I've known you for a couple of weeks and I just confessed to you so now let's fuck." Compared to that the only particularly "forced" sex scene in F/SN is that first one with Saber, and even that isn't the most awkwardly placed one I've seen.

Again, that's not really the case - and even when it is, the confession was mostly just confirming feelings they already had. In a decent portion of the pure-love VNs I've played it more goes something like this:

- Variable amount of ばっかぷる scenario time

The ones where the H scene literally immediately follows the heroine falling in love with the protagonist are actually few and far between.

Yes, the feelings are usually developed beforehand, but that doesn't make the sex scenes fit naturally. Sex is one of those things that is hard to convincingly portray in fiction so most h-scenes end up "forced." It doesn't bother me because I realize the limitations, but I just think it's a stupid thing to hold against an eroge. Especially when it makes up a such a small part of the overall story.

There is a difference between real litterature and porn novels, the same goes for VNs.
There are VNs who are great works of fiction and then there is also porn VNs which is pretty much regular porn and less story.

And then there is VNs who are like the James Bond movies, lots of action and plot and then the porn at the end.

A story focused on porn can rarely ever be as good as a story focused on story, Hybrids can make it though, there is nothing that says that having porn will make the story worse. One just have to make it not seem forced.
