Stop using summons and Ultima, then.

The only decent summons are Hades and Knights of the Round, and Knights of the Round is the most annoyingly long, so you might as well forget them.
Ultima, while powerful, is overly expensive and inferior to, say, Comet2.
Hell, just bamf your stats and abilities with Support Materia and own ass with attacks. It's the best tactic, as rockawesome Limit Breakers are better than any summon anyway.

That is to say, don't ignore KotR if you're trying to fight Emerald WEAPON.

But then, if you're fighting the two uberWEAPONs, you shouldn't be caring about long animations because you're fighting enemies with 800000 HP and ridiculous stats, so long fights are beyond a given and into inescapable.

Maybe if you're used to all those twitchy american fps games. I played through Battle Moon Wars twice without ever turning the animations off, and would do it a third time.

Yes, that's what I'm saying. ToP had a better combat system than the first SO and to this day the Tales games still have a better combat system than the Star Ocean games. More fluid, more fun to play. Anyway, other worthy mentions for good combat systems are Grandia (to bad most the games after the first are shit, despite the good combat system, though I have a soft spot for 2) with the best turn-based system I've played and Odin Sphere which is well, Odin Sphere.

SO1 was an unfinished game. It was released before they completed it. SOFD is better, but not by a whole lot.

I certainly don't think so.

>Odin Sphere

Okay, I loved Odin Sphere, but you're seriously not going to defend its battle system. I'm saying that in stone. It is the most repetitive game EVER. You cycle through the same bosses and stages 5 times! You even fight one of the final bosses twice! (Beast of Darkova)
The characters don't vary in gameplay enough to warrant FIVE repetitions.

Other than that (and slowdown, but I actually enjoyed the slowdown because I could appreciate the beautiful action frames more), it was very good. I loved the PLANTS THAT EAT SOULS gimmick.
