I've been going through the archives to see everyone's reactions on Umineko Episode 8, and honestly' it's been pretty funny. Just about every comment I see hating on the ending has been the same "WHERE IS THE ANSWER" and "HE CALLED US GOATS" or "IT WAS NEVER A MYSTERY???". And I'm like, what? I read the VN and had no issue with the story at all, I loved it in fact. The goats is a huge one I still see complaints about even now and I really don't understand it. Even back in what, the first episode tea party, R07 wrote how the bottle detailing the "events" of what happened made its way shore and from there was being theorized on. That was continued through the subsequent chapters and Episode 4 delved into how theorizing on tragedies ruined the lives of the survivors (Eva and Ange), I never got why people took it to such heart that R07 was talking about the readers when it felt more like it was about those in the future that kept damning members of the Ushiromiya family as the culprit. This wasn't some massive left turn he threw in the story like some people think it was, it's been built up from the beginning.

Goddamn, I am so mad about the "official explanation". It's so disgusting.

Words like "human", "murder", "homicide" and "everyone" are made meaningless. I wouldn't even mind if the author had been careful and had only used the words "persons" and "killing". It would be lame but not disgusting.

Not just that, but "multiple personalities" are completely unaccountable. They can do whatever they want. It can be said in red that "A is B" because they are the same person. It can also be said in red that "A isn't B" because they are different personalities. Even the word "being" can't be taken seriously anymore.

When a personality is not active, you can both say that it exists or that it doesn't exist. Because of this, all the numbers are also meaningless. There's no standard. Whatever it takes to dance around the red truths.

Not just that, but it's not even a case of "A was actually B" which would be more respectable. It's actually "Z was A and B", with Z being explicitly mentioned nowhere until the very end. This way, you don't even need to own a suicide. Just switch to a never-mentioned-before-personality before doing anything, and you get away with it.

If all this "wordplay" and "multiple personality" hacks wasn't abusive enough, it gets even worse. Nearly everyone is on it. Everyone is an accomplice at some point, if not outright a co-culprit as well. Because clearly the hacks weren't overpowered enough. You still need everyone to collaborate.

Worst of all, these "official solutions" are never stated in red. That is despite having no problem with making up new red truths, none of them explicitly confirm anything. So we can never have real closure. We can never be certain if he's just fucking with us or truly deluded.

Whenever it's not consistent, they specify it's an exception. Like when they use person to refer to bodies in EP6. They explicitly say it only applies to this puzzle because Erika is asking for it and it happens to be true. That doesn't mean person equals body in general. They can say "three people, in other words, three bodies went in" because it applies to that scenario. It's not always like this, this is an exception and they acknowledged it.

People always refers to the personalities. And NO, Jessica can't pull a second personality out of her ass to make some random theory work. Shannon and Kanon count as their own people and no other alternate identities do. Why? Because Beatrice makes the rules and that is the truth of her game. That's the whole point. Understanding Beatrice and how she views the world. It's not an objective definition that lets anyone insert personalities at will.

Same with the "truths" that come out of Clair in the EP7 Tea Party, or the Lion fragment we see in EP7. None of that is objective truth, it's all Beatrice's personal truth and has obvious biases and conveniences that prove it.

I stumbled upon this while googling for Higurashi spoilers. What do you guys think? I refrained from watching the new anime because I thought if it's just adapting the sound novel then I'd just go and replay it instead of watching a butchered adaptation. Now reading this, it seems like the new anime is written by Ryukishi himself on top of being a brand new arc, so there must be some new contents. And the fact that it's written by Ryukishi himself and not another writer's headcanon (like the console arcs) makes it worth watching for us purists.

Let's theorize in a different direction for a bit.
Maybe this story doesn't have a big bad, and it's more of a character study of Rika becoming a witch as the result of her own choices.
Rhe thought she "won" when she escaped the eternal June, but life outside of that timeloop isn't actually perfect. There's still suffering and malevolence, bad things happen to good people, and there's nothing anyone can do about that. But Rika would probably find that difficult to accept, especially if Hanyuu was more of an aspect of her personality and she was the one having the power to and choosing to loop all along. She would keep going back to a previous savepoint to try and fix things instead of living as a human - until happiness and suffering loses all meaning for her.
In that scnariou the could also be a Lambda origin story about Satoko saving her catatonic friend by becoming a witch herself.
