/jp/ original VN discussion thread.

Would you play an english language VN without sex scenes? What about a kinetic novel?

I'd like to see a story about crushing poverty, myself. Bonus points for dying dogs, kids and non-weeaboo art.

Picture inevitably to become related.

>> No.2729420

depends on what it was about, and whether it was any good. So basically, this is a stupid question.

No, because judging from Katawa Shoujo, English VNs are complete and utter shit.

Ever17 was awesome and it didn't have sex scenes.
Katawa Shoujo is very good and it's native english.
I've played kinetic novels and they're pretty cool.
So yes, I would, if it didn't suck.

You're right.
Let me rephrase that question --

How good would an English VN have to be in order to get your attention?

The reason I'm asking is that I have this nagging suspicion that an English visual novel would have to be far above the norm in terms of quality to pull me away from Japanese VNs. Even though it's entirely irrational, I have a suspicion that I'd pass over Narcissu and Planetarian if I knew (or thought) they were original English works. I'd probably be a lot more critical of the prose, too, since I wouldn't be able to wave my hand and convince myself "oh, it's just the translation". Also, mollusks, etc.

>> No.2729461

>>2729454
English VNs would most likely be complete shit unless the setting takes place in a fictional world. American highschools fucking suck.

Really, all you need is a good abstract. If it's good, then people will give it a shot (try avoiding spoilers).

If you're really lucky, some kind soul will read your work and like it enough to post about it. This step is a little iffy though given the whole dev conspiracy thing.

well, now that -is- a more interesting question. I'm tempted to say that it wouldn't be a big deal... after all, by the time you get to scenes about mollusks or "it feels so good I want to vomit" you are more or less already committed to the story.

VNs which are dynamic on the screen are easier to forgive than LOL MASSIVE WALL OF TEXT simply because if it feels like I'm reading a book then I expect it to be virtually free of errors. (ie grammar-nazi /typo-fag approved) I'm more willing to forgive those sorts of things if the visual component consists of more than just a static sprite flapping its lips at me. Whether it is translated or OEL isn't really a factor for me... the whole 'being pulled away from japanese VNs' is a silly sentiment and you should feel silly for harbouring it.

>> No.2729530

oh yeah, other posters have made a good point.

But I love the NVL format so much. It flows so much better and it saves me the clicking. Granted, it depends on the author's style, but NVL is love.

Something that'll help tremendously if you're a little lacking in the visual department is good audio. Good background music and careful use of SFX makes the experience so much nicer. In fact, audio is probably much more important than visual unless it's a pure fap game.

>'being pulled away from japanese VNs' is a silly sentiment and you should feel silly for harbouring it.

And I do feel silly. I admit that it's a poorly rationalized prejudice that I'd do well to rid myself of -- and at the same time, I wonder if it's one that's shared by many others.

One of the things I really like about Umineko is that the prose and cues are structured on like a radio play rather than a novel. I wonder if that kind writing for VNs would be worth emulating in an English visual novel... ...

"And how are you, Mr. AAAAAAAAAAndersooooon?"

... ... hrrm. Maybe not?

Meh, why not? They exist as a medium to entertain, and if it entertains me, then it has served its purpose.

>What about a kinetic novel?
Oh, hey! Umineko's EP4 is translated! FUCK YEAH!

>>2729485
Shit, homie. That'd be dope!

>>2729454
>How good would an English VN have to be in order to get your attention?
How well it's written would have to be inversely proportional to my boredom. Well, at first anyway. I'm usually pretty bored whenever I read a VN or a book. And then I finish them.
Like Eragon. Shit books, but I finished it cause they were there and I had already read one book.
Would I read it again? No
Would I recommend it to others? Hell no.
But it was there and it served its purpose of entertaining me for a while.

Now in order to get me to pay a good amount of money for one it'd have to be REALLY good. Like Umineko level.
