Dungeons won't help you in troop battles, other than the fact that some give you satisfaction bonuses or items.

But yeah, the raccoons are tough; what you'll want to do is to try to capture as many as possible before attacking their castle.

I go for the muskets early. If you wait until Yuzuki/Tanigawa had 1000+ troops behind, they become extremely difficult.

Do the 4 captain parameters (Str, Def, Int, Spd) affect troop battles in any significant way, or are they mainly for non-troop battles? From what I've seen, 2 separate damage rolls are calculated, one for the captain, and one for the troops, who are only affected by level and size.

Dungeons are primarily used for items, helping your level your troops for the boss battles (which are commander battles), and for fulfilling requirements for character clears or events. I think unit level might affect the damage the "commander charge" attack does, though.

It's not hard to conquer it, just lose when the pandas attack. By the way, when they suffered an earthquake and had troops decimated, does it help to decimate more the food with poison you can send? Or it's just for laughs.

And you can recruit the tengu with the pandas when you conquer it. He's quite powerful.

Capture Iga with Suzume in your attacking force, this will stop Inukai from taking back Iga.

Kenshin helping is a random occurence, she can also help you on occasions.. basically if it's really unfavourable to you, just load it and hope she doesn't show up.

Typically I try to run with two uber groups, one that wipes out the group through casting(see: Omachi/Natori, combined with turn reducers, see: Uruza, Yamagata, Kenshin) and one that wipes out the group through assasinations (see: Suzume, Kousaka, Kikkawa, any ninja class). Both have their uses dependings on what you're up against. Also, battle result up is always good if you can push for just a win via attrition. Obviously these depend on which captains you have.

Natori has an ability which reduces every enemy's HP by 30% of their max.
Convert action is a monk ability that restore one action to a unit.
Yuzu is the female musketeer who has the ability to kill enemies in one shot. The item is found in Texas and increases the number of moves of a unit by 2.
I've found that damaged units are asassinated with higher probability than normal. Otherwise upgrade your asassins to have asassinate2. That's about it.

There's a wiki. It can be easily found via. google, and you should feel bad for not already finding it.

To siege castles with ease add "initial battle rating" skill to every character you play. Put five of them in the battle and the blue bar will be past the middle before even fighting.

Use the same tactics when defending.

If you still have problems dominating castles, kill yourself. This game is fucking easy.

I started playing it because someone made a thread about it on /jp/; wasted a bunch of time reading strategy guides and whatnot, and wound up being horribly slow at playing as I spent too long planning out city locations and city specializations, plus getting carried away with micromanagement. One thing to note, for everyone playing SR:

Take your time. The plot will advance as you capture houses, not as you take turns. Don't worry about your score, as it's perfectly normal to get a score of 0 on your first playthrough.

Actually, main plot for the first half only advances when you take CERTAIN houses.
The houses that owns those hyoutan bottles.

Although it's tough, you can actually take over much of Japan without triggering Majin Nobunaga at Honmmyouji event if you just take the lands that don't have the bottles.
But this makes the game really hard, since you'll be in war with many nations at once lol

I thought of that first but no, the prison still has space. At the start of the game it can capture commanders normally but it suddenly stopped capturing somewhere during the middle of the game. (still at turn 37). I think it was around the time you faced troops with 1000+ people in them. Yeah I am, this is my 4th playthrough, playing on normal trying to unlock Takeda and the Eyeball house. I guess I'll just start a new game once I unlock the Eyeball house since I already conquered them and is just waiting for the eyeball guy to join.

Dammit it took a lot of effort to defend against Takedas blitz attack not to mention its not fun defending against multiple houses counter attacks every turn while keeping them alive because they have one of the Takeda generals. ;_;
