Wow, /a/, I have to say, getting into light novels has been a great experience. As someone who likes to dabble in writing myself, I always found myself thinking 'that sentence or those few words could be cut out' to normal novels, but this is not so with light novels.

I mean, I do somewhat remember reading short stories when I was younger, but light novels are different. They seem to take 'succinct' to a new level.

Instead of explaining fantastic things to an 'outsider' character (basically self-insertion of the reader) they make the main character completely at ease with ghosts, demons or the supernatural. So because they take such things as the norm, it becomes believable.

Because of this, it allows the story to take an unconventional route, as opposed to long exposition at the beginning, you can throw the reader out of the bathwater in the first volume, straight into this world, and rather than being 'told' what is happening, you see it.

Good example is Kara no Kyoukai, which largely explains all the necessary backstory using Shiki's internal dialogue. The 'always in first-person' also makes the character story much more interesting.

So /jp/, I would like to hear your thoughts on favorite light novels etc etc.

You're sort of just describing Nasu's writing, I think.

I liked KnK because it was refreshing to have a first-person from a girls perspective.

I don't have a favorite, but I have been enjoying DDD lately.

This would be a pretty good thread, but now all the summer crowd are going to reply constantly with reaction images and not actually bother reading OP.

Maybe you could repost it with the mistake fixed or something, iono.

>> No.2714507

Light novels fucking suck. This thread fucking sucks. Most of all, the OP fucking sucks.

uh, what you just pointed out occurs in most well written fiction as well. in media res, anyone?

Fate/Zero >>>>>>>>>> Kara no Kyoukai

It has a similar no-exposition-to-the-point style because it expects you to know all the shit Fate/Stay Night took 7 hours to tell you.

>> No.2714558

Some of what you say is right, some isn't. Making no question over the existence of demons etc. usually makes things less believable, because there are obvious inconsistencies that the story feels less need to address.
You are of course right that it's better to be shown than told, but all good stories do that.
My favourite books are China Mieville's trilogy that starts with Perdido Street Station; now these are long works (800-odd pages each), but they need it, and never drag. They pull you into a wonderful different world - but the length gives time to let you see many sides of it, and understand gradually how it all works. And while there is a character story of course, that's less important; the real joy lies in the world rather than the people.

Writing style, writing quality, etc.

Fate/Zero is much better.

>>2714560

Fate/Stay Night is the definition of "dragging on".
Rin explained how SERVANTS ARE HEROES OF THE PAST like 12 times.

>> No.2714590

>>2714566
Of course she would explain it that many times, if not more. Shirou was a bit of a dummy, if you can remember. Plus one of the routes actually dives deeper into the whole Servant thing and explains that the heros can come from any point of time, ie. Archer. Not to mention that it is basically three different stories all taking place within the same limitations of time, place, characters, setting etc.
