Starting あかね色に染まる坂. I have irrational hate towards tsundere especially the violent one, hope I can fix that with this VN's tsundere childhood friend, especially since she's voiced by the same VA that do Giniro Haruka's childhood friend Mizuha, whose I love very much.

I started playing Grasesta just for Agna and it was worth it, I literally came gallons with her first h-scene. Really wish she had more screentime and h-scenes.
A shame Eushully didn't add a brown goddess on their latest game.

About the tsundere childhood friend herself, can't really say much about her at this point, since it's not just her that's been treating MC like a joke, and he occasionally acts like a retard too which make bad first impression on her. That's kind of why I want to read them in order, though. If I understood the author's discussion of how his new VN relates to his older work, he basically says he's really unsatisfied with his older stuff and feels that the newest one is a completion of stuff he wasn't able to properly do in his older VNs. That makes me think you'd get a lot more out of it if you read them in order and see how the new one follows up on the old ones.

Depends on the drivers you can find for it, ideally you should dual boot Win7 and XP, second best option is Win7 + XP in a VM (VMware > VirtualBox), although just Win7 will be enough for the vast majority of old VNs.
64-bit OS won't provide any benefits over 32-bit unless your laptop has 4 GB+ of RAM, all VNs are 32-bit even now.

That was pointless, 32-bit programs (read: all VNs) can't use over 2 GB of RAM anyway (exceptions exist but none of them are VNs).

No, but there's a lot of stuff that runs on 7 but not XP, so you should install Win7 x64 and keep XP in a VM - unless the only thing you'll ever do on that laptop is playing old VNs strictly offline - and nothing else. XP will do that fine (but you'll waste ~5.5 GB of your RAM which 32-bit Windows can't even see because of licensing restrictions on non-server 32-bit versions of Windows. Make a RAM disk out of them and/or install Windows Server 2003). In all other cases (except for dual booting 7 and XP) up-to-date Win7 x64 with XP in a VM is an objectively superior option.

I just finished D ～その景色の向こう側～. I wasn't really sure what to expect from the game. The title is kinda unassuming and one version of the cover is basically nukige-tier, but this one really surprised me and far exceeded my expectations. I really enjoyed it. The premise is basically that the MC wakes up on a train with no memories, some guy walks up to you with a fatal gunshot wound dies, and you have to figure out what's going on. As the MC progress through train cars, he travels backwards in time and cannot go back. This might sound a little plain, but there's much much more to it that gets revealed as you go along. It's a mystery type of plot. Not in the sense of a mystery novel, but as in "there's a lot of shit you just don't know" which gradually gets pieced together as the plot progresses. I thought the writing pulled this aspect off very well. There's always some things you're wondering about, and there's enough clues lying to figure things out beforehand (if you're clever enough of course). They really did a good job on that part.

One thing I found pretty unique was the distinctly European and early 20th century atmosphere. It's not meant to be exactly parallel to the real world. There's talk of fairies and magic and such. However, the style of dress is obviously not modern and there's talk of a great war in the past (likely a WWI analogue). The cast is, of course, overwhelmingly European (some are literally nobility too). Like half of the characters have blonde hair and blue eyes (including the main hero and heroine). There's a couple of obligatory east Asian characters of course, but it's heavily European and feels that way (also it takes place during Christmas which helps). I found it pretty interesting. Speaking of the characters, the male and female lead are both tsundere for each other which was kind of funny. As you go through the game, you learn about all the other passengers on the train and quite of few of them have some sad, interesting backstories. I felt this was mostly done pretty well, and there's several hard-hitting, emotional moments.

There is one shitty thing about the game though. Sometimes the text is hard to read (literally). Like there are parts with white text on a white background. I don't know who thought that was a good idea, but come on. I see that EGS doesn't have this rated particularly well, so maybe my tastes are off but the overall work is definitely pretty unique and I really liked the scenario. It's not terribly long either, so if you're up for a change of pace from the usual, this would be a good fit.

This is by no means a complete list, and should not be taken as a list of what I personally found compelling or worth playing, either; I mostly went with what garnered a lot of hype and what I see people continue to discuss moving into the 2020s on the Japanese side of things. You might argue that Hello Lady and some of the recent Venus Blood entries should be on this list because they're being localized, for instance, or that subsequent entries in Watanabe's season series also deserve a place. Personally, I liked Seabed more than many of the games I listed here, but I'm not sure it's a "big" title in the way some of the others are; similarly, I would put Yoruboku and Re;Lord episode 3 in for 2017 myself, but I don't know if anyone really cares about those games now, lol.

And, of course, I would be remiss not to mention Yuzusoft's titles. In terms of sheer sales, they beat out everything, and each new release garners hype from basically every corner of the eroge fandom. I only didn't list their games here because there's a ton of them and honestly I'm not really keeping track of them since they're not the sort of thing I'm interested in. Similarly, in terms of sales, Monobeno and Maitetsu should also probably be on this list, but (at least in my circles) people don't seem to discuss the games themselves that much. Nekopara also falls into this category.

In terms of the big picture, I would say that PC eroge were still relatively active through 2012 or so, with many high budget titles from big studios being released and attracting attention. After that, things dropped off sharply, with the advent of soshage and other cultural shifts causing eroge to lose what standing they had maintained moving into the 2010s. EGS is not the end-all, be-all of eroge discussion, but it does serve as a useful barometer for tracking trends, and you can see a real decline in its vote numbers starting in 2013 or so. Aokana is the only game in 2014 with more than 1000 votes, and Sakura no Uta and Sanoba Witch from 2015 are quite simply the last games period to have reached more than 1000 votes on EGS. Anecdotally, I would say this is when a lot of the enthusiasm on the fan side started to fizzle out as well, with people starting to follow specific writers/brands rather than the industry as a whole, or simply immerse themselves more in other hobbies/niches entirely.

Console VNs fared better; there's always going to be an ebb and flow, so to speak, when you're marketing games where You Just Read to a mainstream audience, but I think there were enough high profile titles throughout the 2010s to prove that the genre itself still has legs, if nothing else.

Moving back to eroge, the biggest title in the past few years is indisputably Nukitashi. It managed to build a fanbase consisting of more than just the jaded eroge grognards who have hung on for decades, and the discourse surrounding it recalls the olden days when, to be blunt, people actually gave some sort of a shit about eroge. It remains to be seen if this will have an impact on the industry as a whole, but Qruppo managed to produce the sort of hit that I didn't think eroge were still capable of, and that does give me some hope for the future.

At the same time, there are still many worthwhile visual novels being produced in Japan, both as eroge and as console games, and it would be foolish to assume that the genre itself is dead. If we look outside of Japan, we can see that there are a great deal of western-produced VNs (and other text-heavy games, such as Disco Elysium) that have managed to make waves in recent years as well. I think the genre as a whole is in the process of settling into a comfortable niche as we move into the 2020s; while PC eroge will likely never again reach the heights they did during the 90s/00s, visual novels themselves are here to stay, and there will always be worthwhile titles if you care to look for them.

The commercial PC eroge market and fandom are really in quite dire straits at this point, though, I won't mince words there. I don't know how sustainable the current model is, and I can see a lot of the talent and fans moving to the HRPG market, where costs are a lot lower on both the production and consumer sides. It's also hard to overlook soshage, which have almost certainly already "poached" a great deal of the existing and prospective fanbase. We'll see where things stand in another ten years' time, I suppose.

Hopefully this was informative and gave you some insight into both sides of things.

As an addendum, the most discussed Japanese eroge in 2020 so far are the final 9-nine- game and ATRI, if only for lack of competition.

Likely contender for eroge of the year. A bit late but I just finished binging it and it was an amazing ride from start to finish. All the case are very well-written, though Case-0 is widely acknowledged to vary in enjoyment depending on how much you care about Kaito and Yonagi. Stuff such as realistic non-intrusive background sound effects and mouth sync are also feed my autism for small details.
This really is a special work, and it's ridiculous how far they've come considering the garbage that was Mirai Radio post-common route.
Only problem I have is a few kanji errors in Case-1 if I remember correctly, and the lack of a music mode upon completion. Not that the latter matters too much since I've already extracted the tracks, but I wonder if they simply forgot to put it in after writing this behemoth of a work.

Yes. In fact I think Kanon was where Itaru was the strongest (outside of the H scenes). Moon and One are just as good, if not slightly unpolished. Air was a slight downgrade. With Clannad things went downhill but still decent. Post-Rewrite she completely lost her touch, but some works still look okay unless she's paired with a cheap colorist like in Koropokkur.

Just look at these examples. The colors are vivid yet not garish and cheap like in Koropokkur. The use of shadows and reflections makes CGs stand out. There's also sketch-like and pastel-like CGs that give off warmth. The general attention to detail is fantastic.

Admittedly not all CGs are great. I could just as well make a collage of awful examples, but you can't say there are no good ones.

Your example is a good one. The main issue are those huge shoulders that bloat Nayuki. Those shoulders are what annoy me so much about Clannad where every character has them (though not bloating the characters as in the Nayuki pic). Modern Itaru doesn't have the warmth in her art, the colors are bad and believe it or not the faces got a lot worse. Obviously we're talking about art so it's subjective matter of taste, but that doesn't mean there is no objective truth to the degradation of her art. In short, it looks cheap and lacks detail and impact.

Itaru's art itself changed over the years, as evident when you study how her faces have gotten worse and turned into samey blobs whereas before they were more distinct; but where she has improved is body anatomy which used to be very wonky and off (best seen in Kanon's H-scenes) and now looks more on-point (take the Rewrite CG of Akane's ass which actually looks sexy).
I do think that shading and coloring make a huge difference though. Koropokkur would look a lot better with less eyecancerous colors. Harmonia for example looked a lot better even though it has Itaru's newer blobface. That isn't to say that coloring saves modern Itaru's art. It's still inferior to what it used to be.

Uploaded is often dead and it's slow even with free acc, but sometimes the only working option. Rapidgator on A-S is 99% always premium garbage and not even worth clicking on. I don't think I've seen them using zippy more than a handful of times. Mexashare has good speeds and was the best they used, but recently a lot of uploads get deleted. Mexa also changed the short wait of 25 minutes to 2 hours or so. I've tried TOR to get around it, but the captcha is a real bitch and then most of the time it complains about IP mismatch or expired IP etc. Not worth it. Katfile has solid speeds and files get deleted less often than Mexashare. Wait times still suck.
Most other providers are usually dysfunctional or have dead links. The search on A-S also sucks big time and there's a lot of repeated uploads with same dead links. Checking for that 1 working link is a PITA.

A-S and similar sites mostly use really terrible upload sites because they earn money from them. The good ones like MEGA, zippyshare, anonfiles, solidfiles etc. are only used by other blogs that may use miners or hide links behind link shorteners/redirectors. And torrents for raw eroge are often dead or take weeks/months/years for that 1 seeder to turn up (and then stop seeding when you reach 99%)

Are the h-scenes and romance in Hakuchuumu no Aojashin well implemented? Planning to read that next and I'm reading the second route Sakura no Kumo where it's getting annoying how irrelevant it all feels, they could completely cut out the heroine and you wouldn't miss anything from the story the route is actually trying to tell.
Why even bother adding romance or even making it an eroge if it's going to be like this? I'd rather get random context-less h-scenes with the side-characters that this poor attempt at romance.

I tried reading Sakura no Kumo but I found it quite dull desu, I realized that I was reading more to be surprised by some epic twist than I was reading because I liked the story or the characters. I had the same experience with their previous game Amazing Grace

Same. Whatever happening is not interested and I can sense it's foreshadowing shit for some epik twist in final act but it's not entertaining to read at all. Some of the foreshadowing is too blatant and the "twist" or "reveal" can easily seen from a mile ahead.
