It's a pretty good doujin shmup with good music. Some of the popularity is bandwagon, some of it is genuine game fandom, some of it is from the porn, and (rather unfortunately) most of it is from the doujin works.

There is barely a plot, and the characters get a few lines of inane dialogue per game. It's a STG afterall.

Really though, they're pretty silly. I'm not usually one to care much about plots in stgs but eh, they just seem so goofy. Compare Touhou's "LET'S HAVE TEA with the people we were just fighting" endings with, say, Darius'. They have different endings depending on your route, some of them are notoriously depressing. In one of G-Darius' endings, you defeat the boss and the resulting explosion emits a wave disintegrating everything, the two pilots' (male and female) ships are destroyed, and, well, just watch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6w_FFP0Iv5g

Also Ikaruga's ending is pretty moving when you actually know what's going on (and if you actually understand the ship's voice "Was I helpful for you? I am deeply grateful... to you...")

>> No.2679483

I play touhou without giving half a shit about the story, characters, and fanworks.
I don't know a single thing about the characters, plot, setting, or maybe, a superficial knowledge at best.
It doesn't matter 'cause I'm mostly in it for the gameplay. I haven't gotten into shoot-em-ups since the late 90's and I'm just rekindling my old obsession.
It's up to you whether or not you want to follow the fan works. Most people do. I'm probably missing out on something, but judging from the stuff posted here half the time, I don't think I'm missing out on anything good.

>> No.2679503

I believe I've seen EVERYTHING the Touhou canon works have to give, and I tell you, none of that you'll get to see in here. Like I said, it requires a lot of research to get to know what touhou really is, just judging from fanon and it's userbase will get you the wrong ideas, leading to believing it's shit.

Browsing a wiki for a few minutes does not constitute "a lot of research".

You fail. The whole line of thought about "what touhou really is" is dumb.

You don't really know what's going on in the middle of Touhou either... most of the text is like "ARE YOU THE CULPRIT?!" "Culprit? what?" "BUT ENOUGH TALK, HAVE AT YOU!" and then you fight the boss. Then you win and Reimu is like "Wellp, onto the next boss!" Darius is a struggle against a race that uses aquatic-themed battleships trying to eliminate humans. Depending on the stage route, that is how the story plays out. Aliens trying to eliminate all humans may be a bit generic, sure, but certainly not nonsensical.

>THE TRUE CANON TOUHOU UNIVERSE
Danmaku fight. Tea and Crumpets End.
You'll never need a "Crisis in Infinite Gensokyos" in the Touhou Universe.

...but there's really not much to canon in terms of "plot". We have the games, which are primarily about gameplay and have the usual minimum plot justification. And then we have glimpses of characters via BAiJR, scanty biographies in PMiSS, and a few short stories via the few manga, CoLA, and CiLR

My point was that, without outside research, you really have no idea what is going on in any STG plot, dialogue or not, considering STG plots are generally only there to give a reason for the visual theme. Including Touhou. I'm going to sleep, I don't even know why I'm posting in this thread, haha.

>> No.2679664

Anyone who thinks that Darius has no plot whatsoever apart from shooting down fish-shaped battleships is a bit misinformed.
I don't know if the old episodes have something akin to that as well or they adopted it on a later date while riding the wave of more recent shmups trends, but this is - for instance - the backstory for G.Darius:
http://www.geocities.com/hugedb/gameinfo/GDIntro.html
And yeah, this is just what carried over to the localized version. Since I have no knowledge of moonrunes to speak of I haven't even bothered to check the original source, but I assume that it would be far more sizeable and fleshed out.

Not wanting to prove anything here, of course. Just setting some records straight.

Storm Causer was such an awesome boss fight.
They knew that with all the troubles they went through to animate it, using Golden Ogre just as a pushover boss for the introductory level would have been a waste, so they palette swapped its sprite, gave it new moves and place it in one of the final levels too.

Talking about Darius Gaiden in /jp/ is like trying to discuss Heidi on /a/.

Even if both were made on Japan, people around won't even touch the game because it lacks of moe girls which is pretty much the only reason Touhou gets posted in /jp/ this much.

I like Darius Gaiden a lot, one of my favorites. The music is great, the gameplay is good as well as the story. Touhou is a great shmup, I have to admit I wouldn't have discovered Touhou if it wasn't for its fast growing fanbase, still it makes me sad that the game are being put aside and the fanmade material is taking over.

I don't think Touhou fandom is far to become into something similar to the Naruto or Bleach fandom in a few years ... it is unavoidable now.
