Just a hint for Vista (probably 7) users. PatchCon will run as administrator, because the program name has "Patch" in it, so it thinks it's an installer. You can sidestep it by either renaming it something like Ptchcon.exe or by changing the specific setting in group policy.

I think ~15 expensive units, ~20 units of the middle types, and ~30 of the cheap melees is a good compromise. That's if I'm using all 5 slots, if I'm only using Reisen (and some other for support) I naturally get more.
Buy units at level 2. That's when they're the cheapest.

Easiest way to beat this game is to spam Reisen (with three or four Tewi for luck assists). Level 6+ Reisen with Level 6+ Tewi luck fires is basically unstoppable.

Level 6 Reisen has explosive danmaku with confusion effects (that does decent damage besides). Pair them up with Level 6 Tewis to make the confusion effect trigger almost every time and no one will get close enough to hurt her without getting stunned and firing a few random bullets (probably at friends) before dropping quickly to follow-up shots.

Artillery danmaku can be tricky to deal with (Kanako, Sikieiki) but everything else is trivial. Reisen squads are almost literally untouchable at higher levels.

i beat tower defense using sakuya, patchy, and remilia.

level 6 remilia was great. Long range, good damage, penetrating, and explosions whenever the lance penetrated a single enemy. explosions everywhere.
