A question for you, /jp/. Ever since Samurai Champloo came out, I've wondered what that white thing is that projects out of the front of Jin's clothing (circled in the image.) Today, it dawned on me that perhaps someone here could tell me and the question would stop bugging me. So... does anybody know? I very much appreciate it.

So that sort of thing was ordinary practice, or is this dumb gaijin - who knows nothing of this era of japan - being made fun of, lulz? (btw, it isn't a 'duh,' 2672440, as I would wager that it's extremely likely your own knowledge of historical clothing/daily life is limited to your area of interest, Japan. I wager you wouldn't know much offhand at all about 1600s court dress of the various countries in Europe, for example.)

A cursory Google search seems to imply tegata are primarily a champion sumo wrestler thing? (mental image of Jin as a sumo wrestler = LOL)

Rice paper, for cleaning&re-oiling the sword before sheathing it again, to prevent rust and preventing dirt from entering the saya, thus damaging both the sword and the saya.

If you watch many anime, manga, drama, movies about Edo period, you can find it is not so mysterious. it is just papers. Japanese use papers to blow nose from Edo period. They do not use handkerchiefs. and you can find the scene that a samurai uses paper to wipe blood on katana after some katana fight.

Thanks for the reply. So it -is- paper, after all. Interesting. The method of carrying it is especially interesting, but I guess it's not like there were pockets to put the paper into?

Hurr Durr that's what we've been telling you the entire time.

Basically Kimono has no pockets. but kimono it has big sleeves, sleeves are used like pockets.

And big flat paper is tucked inside the front of the clothing. I guess sheets that size would be bulky if folded up small to fit within any kind of a pouch.
