The whole canon vs. fanon thing is getting rather old when the reality is that both have merit and the only real issue is the more extreme argument from either side.

Without the huge fan driven elements Touhou would likely be little more then another mundane shmup series and without ZUN's continued work on the series the fan community would soon lose interest all together. Both compliment each over to the point it works, there is no reason for the two to remain at odds.
