I don't think they went into anime I think they just died.
The giant auteurs of anime were all more or less in comics and animation from the start.
That said I'm pretty sure Ghibli will fade into relative obscurity after both Takahata and Miyazaki go. They don't have any worthy creative heirs either.

That's the way it rolls. The young superflatists take their place I guess.
