I'm new to Touhou(and shooters in general), /jp/.

The level 20 boss of the first game is the hardest boss I've ever come across in a video game, and I've beaten games like Devil May Cry 3 and Ninja Gaiden Black on the higher difficulties. I can't read this guy, though. I've been at it for a couple hours now. Maybe I just suck?

I started this games because of those cute lolis with the funny hats. This isn't what I expected.

Is it gonna get even harder?

Yes, it's like learning to play an instrument if you're not used to shooters as many in our generation aren't. Like any instrument or skill, you start off by sucking and you build up xp with practice. Just don't get discouraged switch from game to game (you might find PCB or IN is easier than EoSD, for instance), and try the easier difficulty level.

Some have suggested that practicing on Easy is a bad idea and will cripple you, but from a pedagogical standpoint I'm not sure how this is possible, seems like if you're a complete beginner Easy isn't a bad place to start, although there's no doubt that the game is more interesting on Harder levels.

I played PCB for a week or so, was able to get to the fifth stage on normal before getting game over. Sucked pretty hard. Stopped playing for a while and played IN after. Found it easier, for some reason.

That's cause it is.

But as a general rule I think it's easier to try a fresh game after grinding into a single one with little sense of progress.

Just play calmly, and make sure you use focus when dodging clusterfucks of boolets.
