I've bought a few figurines off Ebay (I know the risk of getting bootlegs, I only bought them becuase I'm starting my collection and they were cheap) and three of them arrived today (see pic, the Miku figma is the only old one). I noticed that Kohaku and Revoltech Dark Saber had little 'holographic' Type-Moon stickers on the box. Does that mean they're real? The Good Smile suited Saber didn't have this sticker, does that mean it's a bootleg?

What's the difference between bootlegs and real figurines, apart from the obvious lower quality materials? Is it ever really worth cheaping out and buying a bootleg instead of the real thing?

And that, son, is why bootlegs are bad.

>> No.2651814

Kohaku and Dark Saber retail price is about 2,000 yen (20 USD), the suited Saber is 7,000 yen (73 USD). How much did you paid for it?

>I noticed that Kohaku and Revoltech Dark Saber had little 'holographic' Type-Moon stickers on the box. Does that mean they're real?

I recall some bootlegs having the stickers, posting photos of the box will help.

>> No.2651870

dark saber looks legit.

the kohaku may be fake. If u got it for like 20 and it says sega on the box. u got like the cheep ass knockoff that was ment for like arcade games. i dont know if that counts as bootleg

i havent seen the saber in a suit before.

the miku revolvetec one. i dont remeber her having a big smile like that. that may be a bootleg.

I paid about $6USD for Dark Saber and $15 for Kohaku, suited Saber was $4 so I'm most suspicious of that. Both Sabers were from Hong Kong, so I don't really expect them to be real. Kohaku is from Japan.

>>2651828
I can post photos of the boxes, but they're going to be worse than the OP pic since I had a bit of sunlight to light that one up (it's almost 10pm now) and my apartment's shitty bulb needs to be replaced. Still worth the effort?

Your best bet is to compare your fig with a stock photo on the official fig maker's site. Although some figs can be bootlegged really well so you have to examine really closely.

They made a shit ton of the darksabers. they overproduced them. for a while my wholesaler was selling them for 7 dollars a pop.

>some figs can be bootlegged really well
Is there really much of a difference, then? I mean, sucks a little bit that the money isn't going to the people who designed them, but it's $10, they'll hardly miss it.

>>2651900
I know.

>> No.2651916

Don't bother then.

Another way to tell bootlegs is through casting marks. Bootlegs they tend to cast in less pieces, sometimes the whole figure is cast from a single mold making it look really rough, the lines along the side are more obvious and the paintjobs in hard to reach places are terrible due to this.

Not all bootlegs are this obvious though, go to places like hobby search find pictures and compare.

it doesnt matter on cheeper figures like those. But if you get serious into collecting you'll want to know.

I know a guy who spent 100+ bucks on a bootleg haruhi. If he wants to ever resell it he'll be hard pressed to find anyone to buy a bootleg at the collectors price.

Bootlegs tend to fade and wear down a lot quicker then the real ones. Some break easily, ect ect..

Any FSN figure is highly suspicious unless you're buying from a trustworthy source. A comic book store I frequent sells bootlegs and at least half the figures are FSN, just about every saber is flooded with bootleg clones.

This place typically sells them from $60-$100, I feel bad for anyone who buys them.

Bootlegs also tend to have horrible balance issues, any top heavy one will start to bend over within weeks at the ankle or any other weak point.

Im betting this is your kohaku,
http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/image/10060479p2/10/2

i dont know if that is classified as a boot leg or just a cheep fig.

The PVC under tall Saber's suit is unpainted, so that's definitely a fake. Kohaku is pretty well-painted and well-molded, and I can't find any faults with Dark Saber without seeing photos of a real one.

>>2651918
These are just the start of a collection, so I'm not too fussed if these are fakes, but in the future when I get into preordering figures and stuff I'm going to be more careful what I pay for. I know Ebay is the last place to look for real figures, but how are places like HLJ/jlist? Am I likely to get bootlegs from them?

The Dark Saber fig is a bootleg. The little hair is off to the side (it's suppose to be more straight). Loss of detail in the fingers. The bracelet is muddy looking when it shouldn't be.

>>2651941
Hard to tell if this is bootleg based off op's pic. You have to examine the figure yourself OP.

http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/image/10060479p/10/1

Compare it with the images, and especially look at the fingers and coloring. Bootlegs often have warped fingering and color bleeding.

i have not known hjl or jlist to sell bootlegs. when you preorder stuff or buy new release stuff, it is kinda rare to get bootlegs because it takes them a while to copy it.

>> No.2652102

I've been thinking of buying off ebay sometime in the future. I haven't thought too much about bootlegs since to me a model is a model.

But it sounds a bit scary with models bending over and such, is it common on bootlegs or more of a worst case scenario?

Otherwise as long as you do not get a monster face it seems like a good deal.

>> No.2652132

I dunno, I think there'd be a strange kind of satisfaction in owning the next Sader/Jissouseki.

>> No.2652148

>>2652102
Bootlegs for the most part are put together decently and there isnt a huge difference. In some rarer cases you get the imbalances and the saders and shit.

The most common problem in bootlegs is the paint they use. It is very sensitive to light and could fade much faster then the norm. Ive also seen people use water to clean their bootlegs and the color runs.

Other then that there isn't a huge difference in bootlegs, or else the seller would have a lot of "THIS IS A BOOTLEG" in their ratings. They are usually good enough to fool people.

So just check the sellers feedback first and if it is a bootleg, most likely you'll be OK.

>>2652148
OP here, the figures are on the top shelf of my bookcase. There are tall buildings opposite my apartment's window. They're not going to fade from light, it's like a dungeon in here.

i'll remember to keep them out of the light when I move though.

OP here, I hate to bump a dead thread but I just remembered that I got a 1:100 scale Alfa Romeo inside Kohaku's box. What's the deal with that?

Figfag here
Revoltech saber (both of them) sell for 8 dollars in Japan these days. Not a bootleg as no one would profit selling bootlegs for that price. Also, they dont bootleg moving joint figures.

Fate zero saber is a bootleg. Its easy to tell even with a blurry photo.

That kohaku figure I believe is a ufo catcher, therefore worth like 10 bucks max. Not a bootleg. Its just not that great since its probably made by sega.

>> No.2652551

>>2652537
Kohaku is definitely made by Sega, it has the word on the back five times.

Good to know about the other two, I expected Zero Saber to be a bootleg the moment I saw it for $4 and after a bit of fiddling the Revoltech Dark Saber is pretty decent quality, I'd be happy with it even if it was a bootleg.
