I was doing the kklc book and I got like 200 or so kanji deep into the book and I just couldn't continue anymore. It was so dry and boring, fuck that book. I'm not new to kanji or anything, I know a lot and was just trying to learn the rest of the ones I don't know, but god damn it I'm now convinced that resources like kklc or rtk are probably one of the worst ways to learn kanji when you don't already know the vocabulary that match those kanji (it was fine for characters of words I already knew, save for the awful/dry mems written by that Harvard guy). I put the book away, I can't stomach anymore of it.

In the meantime I started doing those anime cards that QM write a guide for. I've been reading through a visual novel and have been making flash cards in the same style as QM for a little while now and it's going very well. I'm really happy with my progress so far, I'm definitely going to keep up with this. I got the bad ending, and then I replayed and finished one route in the VN already and it was really good, now in going through the second route and I have already noticed a large improvement in my skill level compared to where I was when I first started reading this vn. I'm really happy with this.

yeah "just reading and looking up everything i dont understand" is the plan for a bit later actually. manabi is iOS only it seems so its no option for me as i use an android phone. i already installed yomichan though its really helpful.

i actually thought more of something to learn single kanji/words or even something to help with hiragana and katakana in the beginning as i tend to forget them over time (i had them all down once, but forgot them again since i didnt use them enough in daily life). i might just need to get myself to read things in japanese to better memorize them.

Life continues, as it always does. I did the Japanese school for a bit more after the wedding and I continued teaching part time and then eventually quit the Japanese school and switched to full time teaching. Me and Sakura decided to have our first kid. The kid is born and then I started to realize that I was falling into the trap of English teaching (it's an awful job, never teach english. I'm seriously warning you guys, don't do it) and I began to teach myself to code in hopes of getting a better job. And it worked out, after 7 months of teaching myself I managed to find a job as a developer in a Japanese company. I stayed in that job for a while and things went really well, no complaints really. Me and Sakura decided to have a second kid.

Fast forward to today, I'm a happy dad with a sexy Japanese wife, I have a good job, we own our home and have no mortgage, and we're very comfortable financially. Right now I'm focusing on my savings/investments, but after corona I'm probably going to look for a higher paying job so that I can take out a mortgage on a vacation home. My finances are fine and I could afford to do it now but I don't want to decrease the amount I put in savings so I want at least a $10k increase first (goal is $20k increase though) before I take out a home loan. My goal is to pay off the mortgage on the vacation home through returns on investments. Otherwise if I can't achieve my vacation home goal (beach house), we will eventually inherit a mountain home from Sakura's parents (their vacation house). Oh yeah, and currently I'm in the process of naturalizing and obtaining Japanese citizenship. All of this and I'm still only 24 :) Life in Japan has been very good for me, which is funny considering that life in America was so bad that I was seriously considering killing myself. My biggest fear in life is waking up to find that I'm still only 17 and watching some jvlog on YouTube.

i dont see how this is the case if u look at it as a paid 1 year "vacation" kinda. yea you work but u have a good amount of free time relative to other professions (unless u get a really bad school) and while u wont save shit but u will have enough to live off of and if u have decent credentials u will still get work afterward. u can even use that year to look for work at a foreign company in japan.

@anacreon okay i actually updated my local ffmpeg bin i think mine was really outdated and that caused the audio not to get recorded and it works now
honestly nice script but if i can suggest a few things
1. let me turn off the clipboard inserter with a hotkey
sometimes i watch something in the background and work on something using my clipboard, having it constantly overwritten is annoying so i'd like to turn it on and off without moving the .lua file
2. let me use the same field for both word and sentence audio, this might not apply to many people but i prefer having both files in 1 field
3. i'd like to change the naming scheme of the audio file as i often need the sentence audio and use the name to search for cards with audio
it's already excellent but if you can add these things it'd be even more so, will definitely introduce this on the new site

no, it only does what is expected. it has many options though, but all of them are related to dealing with timings. as you see, very often subs are badly timed, and you don't want your cards to have audio that suddenly cuts where inappropriate.
on top of that, it supports two workflows:
- first where you add a card without definitions, and add them from a dictionary later;
- second where you add the card via yomichan, and then append audio and image using the add-on.

ideally the only option that you need in mpvacious is making a card with `ctrl+e`. everything else is hidden until the user decides to open advanced options. so the initial workflow is not 'complicated'.

i asked previously but i wanted to know the list of words that got removed to see if it's really only rare stuff that is worth off-putting until later
but if you did it programmatically and only got stuff beyond the 6000 range or whatever it was (i forgot) i could definitely see it being the superior alternative to core3k
only issues might be that it's based on core3k which fixes a lot of standard core issues but might have some issues of itself
i thought about whether it might be possible to make a definite core deck one could recommend to everyone without anything on their conscience at some point but it's probably not worth it because people really should just do any deck as quick as possible and mine themselves

so here's a more concrete example of substitution:
ive made a habit of listing all the shit i need to get done during the day the moment i turn on my pc, and i mean that literally, i dont do anything else until i've finished it
i also give rough time estimates to each job (i have an issue of overthinking this so i give myself a 10 second time limit to think of an estimate for a job), then i sort the list by shortest time first

then when i'm checking djt or something and see there haven't been any new posts for a bit (not getting dopamine) i immediately do a job at the top of my list and when that finishes, crossing it off the list gives a nice dop hit which reinforces my job list obsession

when i clear all the <15 min tasks i take the longer tasks and split them into 15 min chunks and do the same thing (listing and crossing off chunks now)
ive been doing this for a week and my urge to shitpost/resistance to stopping has gone down dramatically, essentially i get "bored" quite quickly when nothing is going on in the threads i have open so instead of pointlessly f5ing i'm training my brain to crave the dop hits from getting shit done, and seeing measurable progress feels good

putting in the work to make a list first thing is great because 1) blocking everything i can do on my pc before getting my list ready makes me want to do it pretty bad because its in the way of fulfilling almost any and every craving i might be having atm, and 2) i dont have to inefficently waste willpower and finite decision making energy breaking my mood figuring out what i need to do next so its a streamlined, smooth, and frustration free experience as per expectations and with fewer surprises/management disasters
also if you log every activity and time invested it becomes easy to identify where things tend to go off rails so if youre not sure what your problems are this helps

I wish people would reccomended to me WaniKani as long as i finished learning Katakana and Hiragana

I feel like i've wasted a lot of time on grammar,which i reached a really good level in grammar. But my kanji reading and vocab are very weak,which is really only beacuse some people told me "Dont try to memorize or learn kanji,or its readings. It useless. Focus on grammar instead" Thanks to that,i've been learning Japanese for 1 and a half year,with very low vocab,and very good grammar. Which dont help me really,since i can't read much and then try to look up the kanji or word.

Anyway,if anyone here finished the Hiragana and Katakana,and know how Kanji works as writing system,go and learn Kanji and yes its reading too (The common ones at least) and touch in grammar here and there.

I'm only level 3 at WaniKani now,and i know things that i should know a long time ago,feel like wasted time. It will take me at least one more year to grasp the 2000 kanjis and a decent amout of vocab now,which is really unforutante. Only about level 10+ in WaniKanji you are able to read Japanese materials.

also happy to have received a bit of feedback regarding my pronunciation, namely that it is improving and i'm noticing it improving myself too, but i still sound so utterly non-japanese to myself when i record myself i am quite disappointed
it seems there is people who have studied for less time than me and read less fluently than me, presumably also know less japanese than me, but still get better intonation and sound more japanese than i do, i wonder if it has something to do with native language that would be plausible to me

My script downloads anime with xdcc, so no one will know exactly what you are downloading. This is not torrent.

The main problem with downloading via xdcc until this day was the lack of automation. You had to go to the site, find anime, copy the link, open IRC, register, go to the room, paste the link, confirm the download. Now you can just enter the name of anime and series number. That's all.
