Pretty much. The gameplay is sort of fun at first, but gets old after you've pretty much exhausted everything new to do in combat. The combos are a pain to have to keep slamming one after another accurately (which you pretty much need to on anything other than Normal Mode) and there isn't enough strategy to cover the length of the game.

It was alright, not like most SRPG's, especially since there is very little customization. It's more like a puzzle game where you figure out the best beginning moves so you don't get raped.

The anime suffers from the exact same pacing issues as the game - including the way it datadumps on you in the final 10% of the story. The only difference is that the anime ending wasn't as tear inducing as the game.

I've never understood why the Utawarerumono game always ranked so highly, though - I suppose one thing to consider is that it came out in 2002 and the graphics, music etc. pretty much blew anything released in the same era out of the water, but we certainly had games with better stories before then.
