What's the deal with the anti-fanfic sentiment here? Are not doujins just fanfics with pictures? I bet someone can pass off an original English Touhou doujin by just labeling it a translation and you would save it to your Touhou doujins folder. The main critique against fan-fiction is that they're badly written. But this is just disingenuous when most Visual Novels are just as badly written.

Would you read Japanese fan-fiction? Most certainly you unwittingly already have.

I don't have anything against fiction, if I like the author's writing, I'll read it.

I also like skimming over fanfiction.net because after a point bad fanfiction becomes funny.

It's easier to evaluate a doujin on its art alone.
No western doujin until now has achieved a proper level, neither in art or writing.
But I still look for it. And when I find it, I'll save it with the rest of my doujins.

>> No.2563278

Translation is interpretation. So, in reality, you aren't reading what Nasu or whoever wrote. You're reading a Westerner's interpretation of a something that needs to be lived (that is, their language).

>No western doujin until now has achieved a proper level, neither in art or writing.
All art is easy to imitate, and the writing isn't as good as you think it is.

I read fanfiction occasionally, I have nothing against it.

OP is right, I was thinking about this yesterday while lying in my bed. Turns out /jp/ is a bunch of hypocrites who see everything from Japan as flawless, godly material while looking down on everything else.

And even with this eased conditions, we get shit like Another Dream.
Let's see them really try, and not just go "meh, it's good enough for being western"

Because whenever you see a good western artist doing a touhou doujin, you think they are Japanese.

>> No.2563292

Well, my point is, everything is the fiction of some Western fan, if you don't understand Japanese. And even if you do understand it, the writing itself isn't as good as your average fan-fiction.

So, fan-fiction is inescapable; especially in Touhou, where nearly everything is fanon and few things are canon.

We're not a single entity. Some of us do that, others just enjoy anything that's good.
Don't judge us for the faults of the hivemind. Think for yourself.
We still like KS, don't we? Only reason it gets a backlash is because people can't restrain and keep it in a single thread.

OP and you are idiots.

The worst visual novel is still better than the worst fanfic. The best visual novel is still better than the best fanfic. Also, it is far easier to create good fanart than it is to create a quality re-writing of a story. All fanart requires is being able to draw well. Good writing requires creativity, and by writing fanfiction you are showing that you lack creativity.

>> No.2563325

I would rather read an English translation of SSiB than read a Japanese translation of Another Dream.

>> No.2563330

>>2563319
Unfortunately, the Japanese aren't in the business of being creative. These are lousy stories that would end up in bargain bins if they were sold as books. They're beneath being called literature. The Japanese being the skilled businessmen they are figured that they couldn't get anime fans to read picture-less books, so they put pictures and music in them, turning them from books into easily-consumed visual entertainment that is lesser than anime in the hierarchy of Oriental kitch.

One is official Touhou material written by ZUN and drawn by a popular artist, and the other is an unofficial fanwork with mediocre art by unknown artists. You can't really compare the two. A better way to make your point would be to say, "I would rather read an English translation of Chado's work than a Japanese translation of Another Dream," which is natural since Chado's work is well-drawn and the stories are dramatic and realistic within the world of Touhou, while Another Dream is an unfunny disaster.
