>> “I am Ryou, a daydreamer and a student at Cyrstal Waters High. I have two very close female friends, Claire and Rina. I have a crush on my childhood friend Claire but she is already in a relationship. Rina seems to be attracted to me but… I can’t date Rina when I like Claire. I am a very idealistic but romantic kind of guy. It’s a complicated problem.

When I realized that Claire was suffering from an abusive relationship, everything changed. There was nothing Rina or I did that could get her out of it. There was one last resort. Breaking my romantic ideals to save Claire, I had to learn the art of seduction.

The only thing was… I started to learn that there was something going on in this town. Rumors of creatures running around at night, a close call, and a textbook history that doesn’t add up. Even Claire and Rina are connected somehow. Between finding out what is really going on and saving Claire, I don't know if I could manage both.

If only I could stop daydreaming so much then I might have some time. Why are my daydreams so strong now when I need to focus?”

The only thing that warms my black heart is that their pitch failed to be chosen in the Dragon's Den.

Is there even a sizable userbase for a commercial western VN? I'm assuming they're not taking much risks and keeping the budget close to the ground, which would explain the overall low quality.

Doomed from the beginning, but what's worse, if one could say that, is that it will salt the ground for further projects. With a clear example of a failed attempt, it will be close to impossible to get anyone interested in investing on something like it.

Meh.

I like that. Instead of emulating an existing business, make something new that can attract a diverse base and not just the weeaboo oriented.
Point and click adventure games did well before, but perhaps they were too restricted by the hardware of the time. A way to sell you a somewhat interactive story that is genuinely interesting and arching.

Nah, got nothing. The idea of interactive cinema experience is dead and buried with MGS4 and most of the game buying audience won't sit around for walls of text. Episodic content would be good for delivery. Episode 0 is free, following ones are at a modest price. Hopefully, with a good enough product that people can try it will get enough word.

But enough of marketing, what about the actual thing?. As >>2547552 says, there are distinctly western themes and it's not just restricted to art. Hmm, Mass Effect tried something like that.

Ah, for fucksake, Mass Effect did it already. Branching decisions, dialogs and dialogs interspersed with action. Changing the outcome from a couple of endings to a real branching story could improve it, and adding more action instead of dialogs all the time.

If you choose to make a VN, you should have a pretty good idea of who your audience is, which should make it easy for you to write for that audience. That being said, whoever the fuck wrote this shit managed to misread that audience entirely and comepletely fuck up. He shouldn't be writing anything for anyone.

And since the audience for VNs is pretty much set, the only way you could have a profitable buisness plan for a VN in the west would be to come out with something like a Phoenix Wright. Tl;dr if you want to make money off a VN, make it for the DS.

Going back to business talk thing, becuase that was interesting.

I seriously think that with proper marketing even Japanese visual novels could have market in west. It's just the matter of picking the right ones to localize. For example, many of Nitro+ games aren't very stantard VNs and they hardly ever top the charts in Japan, but they could just appeal to western audience.
There are others like that, VNs that aren't really girl get games. Kanon and Clannad wouldn't really make good starter choices for localization, but later they might be excellent.

Hell, latest Persona games sell hundreds of thousand copies. It's just the matter of getting some positive interest going on, perhaps article on some paper and you could be set for market.

Or hit entirely new one.

Why not try selling them to people who want to read a story? Lots of people have laptops, and I can tell you that Umineko made for excellent reading at bed.

I figure the Nitro+ games would be a great place to start. But then I remember the disaster that befell Phantom of Inferno...
...
Nope, still doesn't work right.

You're suggestion makes me think of the recent market of manga for cellphone displays.
Plus there's the whole netbook thing...

Aside: Don't they still make VNs compatible for win 9x and win 2k?

Nah, Peter Payne's businesses exist solely to collect email addresses (and thus an audience) for his uninteresting essays about his wife, kids, and life as a gaijin in Japan.

There's Nitro+, but what other companies would work?

...Please don't say Type-Moon.

I used to get his e-mails and actually read them because I thought he was going to write at the end of the e-mail that the company was going to have to close down.

but that never happened.

Anyone here play Lux Pain? I got pretty far into it but I wouldn't say it is a good game. I like how I can play it on the go but I don't see how this game could catch an audience.

Found the website, if anyone still cares. It's hilariously bad, mostly due to the gratuitous use of Japanese words in the middle of English text.

>A particular Japanese word that I need to point out is "Iie". This means "No" in English. It's simple enough, but when you read it in the Flash, it looks really similiar to the word "Lie". So just make sure that you don't get the two confused while reading. Just look at the context.
I dunno, this Japanese seems to be a bit beyond my level.

It's shit.

I knew I was in for a real treat when I saw the author's name ( j-pop4life ), and the very first conversation didn't disappoint.

>"Moshi moshi?"
>"Kana, it's me. Taka," I answer.
>"Bro!" Kana exclaims. "Nan desu ka?"

Watashi wa may be a weeaboo faggot desu but this is just too much. I don't want to see any more.
