Like I said before, it's all about active recall. If you can recall information from your brain, you are strengthening that memory. Look up any study about studying and they all say the same thing.

Anki is active recall. (although what's not active recall is just bruteforcing again on cards until you eventually get it, try to actually recall it yourself)
Mouse over dictionaries are not, of course, but you need a way to learn information to begin with, or remind yourself of information you forgot, but if you think you might know a word, give it your best effort to recall it yourself first. Checking isn't a big deal if you're not sure after.

i wonder what the 範囲 is for "words you just ignore" in nihongo because surely it doesnt overlap 1:1 with eigo. i just ignore all medical words but in japanese they're much more etymologically opaque and you could probably understand them really easily but there's probably a subset of words japanese people just let fly past them without thinking that we wouldnt in eigo

I will say this. To my utterly untrained ear (I'm N5 level at most), Quizmaster's accent sounds more natural to me than jamal's. He sounds exactly like a native to me, whereas jamal sometimes sounds like a foreign that has a pretty fantastic Japanese (which I guess can be more impressive in a way, since you'd just assume Quizmaster lived in Japan as a child).

It's my totally unfounded impression as a guy that has watched a lot of anime, but didn't start studying Japanese until this pandemic. I think it helps that my native language is Spanish which phonetically is a lot closer to Japanese than English.

I’ve been studying Japanese since 2017. I started studying simple phrases and vocabulary, together with my boyfriend, before our first trip to Japan during the spring of that same year. I was certain at first that I wasn’t going to want to learn the Japanese writing system and it took quite some time for me to actually start to enjoy kanji (now I love studying kanji, all thanks to WK), but now I’m very excited to learn how to read and have recently read my very first manga in Japanese (Chi’s Sweet home). I’ve finished GENKI I and studied a beginner’s course at the University and have taken quite a few online tutoring lessons. I still feel like a total beginner (even though I’m not), would probably say that my current Japanese level is upper N5/lower N4. My main goal is to reach an intermediate/lower advanced level before our next trip to Japan (which will hopefully be during the fall of 2021 or spring of 2022). Until then I hope to have reached at least level 30-40 on WK. I study Japanese in between working full time in a health care profession, working extra as a wedding photographer, living on and caring for a small farm, taking care of our two horses and juggling all of my other hobbies, haha!

jp-subbed anime would be much better cause it's voiced for instance
also in a game you will have stretches of gameplay where there's not much japanese coming at you so it's not "ideal" from an efficiency perspective either

How uncommon is it for a native Japanese person to not have a kanji in neither their first or last name? I am trying to scrape Japanese names from myanimelist characters. My first idea was to filter out all names with katakana, but many creators love to spell their non Japanese character names with hiragana so my next idea was to also require at least one kanji in their full name. Will I get a lot of false negatives with this strategy?
