I'm going to Osaka this summer.
What should I do there?

Nipponbashi, Castle and Okonomiyaki.

So, is Nipponbashi comparable to Akihabara?
It looks pretty sweet.

This. This is what 大阪 is all about.

I stood in Osaka only for a day and went there in the evening.
Felt a small bit like Akihabara, but it seemed to be tending more to the dark side, if you catch my drift. You can find stores there on main street, that would have been second or third row in Akihabara at most.

Get a massage in Nambu. Visit an izakaya and ask for fugu mirinboshi to eat with a carafe of cold sake. Buy some crab claws from the famous store with the moving crab sign. Also, ride the bizarre red ferris wheel above the DokiHote HQ. Also buy and enjoy some takoyaki like in your pic.
I guess you can visit Osaka castle as well. It's worth a look.

Oh yeah, and spend a day in Kobe. Place is fucking awesom. Weird sculptures and buidlings on the foreshore, a HUGE shotengai which goes for kilometers under the train tracks and is made up of thousands of stores - look for second hand otaku stuff there. I saw about a dozen places selling Famicom cartridges, figurines and manga from the 60s etc. etc. Also, go and chase wild boar on the mountains surrounding Kobe.

Thanks for the posts everyone, I'll try to check all this out when I go there.

By the way, I've heard Osaka is kinda dangerous. But, having heard that from Kantou people, I sorta doubt it.

At worst, I bet it's as bad as my hometown, Seattle.

The area seems to have changed a lot during the last year. Mandrake moved to Amemura and it seems parts of Amemura moved to Den den town. Last month when I visited the streets were full of normal and fashionable people, there was even a shop that sold Japanese street fashion. I couldn't even imagine something like that just a year ago.

Isn't the Ring of Fire Aquarium there?

Ah, what the fuck...

About a week in Kyoto if you move really fast and are willing to skip some stuff. Don't miss Oohara and Mt. Hiei. There's enough good stuff for at least two weeks of active sightseeing, really...

Nara city. A day should be enough.

Rent a bicycle in Asuka-mura and spend a day riding around there.

Spend a day and a night in Kobe and continue to Himeji the next day.

There are lots of cool mountains nearby. Don't know how much fun they are in the summer though, what with the snakes and all.

Festivals/matsuri. Find out where one is held and fucking go there.

Pretty much everything worthwhile in Osaka has already been mentioned except:

-Tennouji zoo and the shinsekai area
-the aquarium
-just walk around the area between Amemura/Shinsaibashi, Dotonbori, Namba and Nipponbashi. Especially in the evening. Can repeat this in Umeda if you want.
-the farmhouse museum in Hattori ryokuchi park
-tsurumi ryokuchi park.

There is much to do in Kyoto, but if you don't have much time, you _can_ for example do all of Higashiyama in one day without missing too many details and still experiencing more than someone who takes it easy.
Japanologists will rage, though.

Both is possible in ONE day.

>> No.2531364

-higashiyama
-hieizan
-ohara
-arashiyama area
-kinkakuji, ryoanji, whatever else is in that direction
-imperial palace, Nijo castle and kyoto tower/kyoto station area
-Kyoto botanical garden and Fushimi inari (don't really fit together but I guess they can be squeezed into one day. Might want to skip the tropical greenhouse in the botanical garden to save time)

Rainy day alternative plan: shopping on teramachi and the nearby malls, and a visit to kyoto municipal museum of art

That's 7+1 days, and you're still missing daimonji (unless you do it on kinkakuji day), a large part of east Kyoto and probably over 9000 world heritage sites. Of course everything I listed isn't a "must-see" but they all are as good as pretty much anything else in Japan.

>>2531285
A day each, yes. More is easily possible of course, and I did suggest Asuka-mura, which is in Nara prefecture and an amazing place for history buffs (and those who just like to enjoy quiet and scenic countryside).
