This game made literally every side girl better than the main one(s), the princess being maybe the only exception. It's funny how they even give you three choices for the main girl design (I'd assume character remains the same, as the voice is also the same), and yet this happened. Luckily not exactly ero, otherwise it'd be even more sad.

Finished playing Souten no Celenaria.

I found the story and characters pretty weak. The setting and history seemed interesting at first, but it’s really left mostly in the background – apart from vague fairy tale interludes between other scenes – while the main story itself just focuses on the heroines taking huge detours helping out different people with their mostly separate issues, and the majority of villains leaned strongly on the cartoony side as well. Lots of developments rely on allies swooping in from nowhere. It’s pretty much shounen anime.

The last chapter in particular felt really rushed, and unless I fell asleep while playing the game never really explains even some of the pivotal plot stuff, f.ex. why the Puseeru are so special for operating the big machines or the 緑色秘本, latter of which conveniently don’t even matter in the end for the main villain’s master plan because he already has a disposable former, despite the books being the driving force of the whole main plot and the reason the protagonist and co. get chased in the first place. The ending really just managed to provoke a simple “that’s all of it?” kind of feeling.

Gameplay:
tl;dr it's not Sunless Skies / 10, so why bother?

One of the biggest issues is that the gameplay and story simply do not mix: gameplay focuses on trading and hauling cargo or people around – simple ”buy low sell high” and using routes that usually have better weather for lower fuel consumption, with a bunch of random events thrown in the mix – but the story is a linear ride about exploration and characters trying to find one person. The gameplay sections amount to nothing but "and then they went to the next place" between actual story. I was first expecting the game to start with a small beginner area and slowly expand the map, especially because sometimes towns want items that aren't available in the current chapter, but no, every chapter has its own new, completely separate area with their own new towns and trade routes. There's never even any main plot objectives in gameplay, it's all inconsequential busywork. The devs went out of their way to implement a map, ship upgrades, grid inventory management, different trade goods, collectibles and such but none of it matters, apart from unlocking few pieces of concept art if you manage to find and buy all the 思い出 items and have them in your cargo hold at the end of the game. And while the story’s focus is on exploring an unknown world and meeting new peoples, all of the points of interest barring hidden ship upgrades and collectibles are already marked on the map (even before you ask around in a town for general directions) so you’re not even really exploring, though it's not like the very limited fuel system that most of the time is only enough for strictly flying from point A to point B would allow for that.

So, you’d be inclined to skip the unfun mess, right? However, like the start of the game warns you there's some scenes during the gameplay portions as well, meaning that choosing to skip the game part would apparently skip them too. It’s just a handful of scenes but sometimes there’s some more important stuff like characters leaving the ship etc. so it’d be silly having them be skipped as well. If the devs were to properly remake this, they should've either reworked the game portion from scratch so it’s actually fun and meaningful, or since it feels like such an afterthought to the story, just trashed it entirely and put the few missing scenes that it has in between actual story parts. The remake letting the player skip the game part on first playthrough feels like a shoddy band aid solution. My suggestion for anyone planning to play this is to not skip gameplay, but just fly to the already marked end point without bothering with any of the boring side quests or trading so you get the handful of more meaningful scenes.

There's NG+ and you unlock two final ship upgrades from game completion, but the gameplay simply isn't fun enough to warrant one and there's no new content or stuff to do unless you missed some of the largely meaningless collectibles. I'd rather much preferred a scene select, especially for the fairy tale parts to catch up and see if shit makes more sense in retrospect. Or even an in-game encyclopedia.

Apparently, all the later entries in the series are much better in terms of story if not in gameplay, but this was just a lukewarm mess on all fronts. Art and music were pretty unremarkable as well.

I liked chapter 1, but got really fucking bored afterwards and just stopped after some really awful ero scene, that made 0 sense. (why have a character so strong they can literally snipe airplanes by THROWING something big at it from the ground, but get raped by random shitters? The amount of lazyness was extreme) But really, Inganock is a lot better. It's still having a bit of a hanger in the middle part, but it's overall very nice. You MIGHT think the last part is "rushed" again though, but I don't think so. The series won't give you by the book explanations and endings.

Played Maoten's common route, On one hand, I love the childhood friend heroine's design and personality. On the other hand, she's getting so much attention in the common route that I feel bad for the other 2 heroines. It's also jarring how the VN constantly turns from fun to serious and vice versa in a few scene. And I don't like the sex scene on common route on this kind of VN even though it makes sense in context. Are all other CandySoft's titles feels nukige-ish like this? I want to try Tsuyokiss after this for Otome but I'll probably put it on hold for something with totally normal modern day setting without any gimmick whatsoever.

Tsuyokiss is pretty normal in regards to sex, only in the routes and not too much.
That said, some of the routes go for some really heavy drama for no reason and tend to fuck up the comedy/drama mix somewhat, with Sunao's being the exception in that regard.

The most jarring thing about Maoten is how a villain appears, gets laughed at, handled as a joke and gets defeated in a funny way, just to come back 5 minutes later and everyone is utterly serious about it, and a serious arc starts.
Maoten is REALLY bad about that shit. I don't think I even read much of a route because of it. Pic related was especially shafted by this completely nonsensical and random back and forth.

I used cheat engine to have infinite fuel and money on the gameplay sections. It was all smooth sailing after that.
While playing the sequels I really appreciated having played Celenaria first. It is a good introduction chapter for the steampunk series world and history when you look at it as a whole.

I'm playing the 2nd part of Akatsuki no Goei after a 5 year break from the first game so I've forgotten a lot of details. Does anyone rememeber what was revealed about Anzu and Akira in the first game?

Apparently Kaito's backstory was touched on the most in Tsuki's route so I may try and find the scenes to re-read later on.

Why is it hard? You go to characters, define it female, main character, and give it ojou trait, as well as your drill hair. The latter is called differently, but the trait input window gives you the correct one even if you input "drill". Then you click on characters on the not particularly big list and find something. Not every character will be 100% what you want, but that's just because drills can be incredibly small and still are drills.

That said, most will be nukige or moege stuff.

Tried Alpha Nighthawk. I dunno why so many writers can't do without absolutely braindead protagonists. I don't ask for much, but I'd love to have a protagonist, or characters in general, where it's not heavily questionable for someone like that to live in the setting of the work, and in this case she also basically got through military training. Yes, it makes it easy to "set up" your story the way you want, but fuck it's lazy and ruins the entire game as the result. It might be a little harder to do, but god is the entire setup FORCED. My advice is, if you don't want to fucking bother actually writing the setup, just don't. It's better to start "in the middle" of the story, then getting such a stupidly bumpy start.

And this game gets a spiritual sequel this month. Great. The industry really needs some actual writers. Even liar soft has been infected it seems. This is just not enjoyable, at all. The girl should've died several times over, and the game would've been better off if she actually did. Alas, dropped.

Now going to try Yuki's route in Mizuiro. The guy who wrote Narcissu did Hiyori's route whereas someone else did the others, and it's like they're different games. The most obvious difference is that there's more elaboration of activities like eating and walking to school. Scenes in Hiyori's route last just long enough to get an impression or a shared moment or a joke across. The conciseness somehow created a reflective mood, like the world being described had something that existed outside of time. By contrast, the other writer's work so far feels more like To Heart or a standard school life game. Unfortunately, the dialogue has also felt less natural.

Moreover, Hiyori comes across differently outside of her route. In her route, although she seems to be crying all the time, at the core she's actually a very shy person. She cries a lot because she gets trapped in a closet every day, which would make anyone freak out, and because the protagonist teases her (though it's made clear that she's not actually upset). However, she's stoical to her suffering when it's genuine. Outside of her route, she transforms into a more spoiled type of character. Furthermore, it was indicated that Hiyori was about as smart as the protagonist, whereas now she seems like more of an airhead. It's trivial, but Yuki is likeable and after Hiyori's route I feel kind of sorry for her, so I hope this writer does her justice.

If you’re a missionary in Japan, chances are you’ve met some closet otaku. It’s too bad your impression of them is so wrong. Decided to read Silverio Ragnarok.
I legit think it takes skill to write an antagonistic group you agree with so much you keep hoping the main characters get BTFO'd into oblivion.
A bunch of immortals who not only never understimate the heroes, but always go all out, make sure to have several layers of preparations, always second check and make sure the heroes get thoroughly destroyed.
Not to mention I actually agreed with what they tried to do, but the game was a super long rant of SMT law=bad, humanity FUCK YEAH! who cares if millions of people keep suffering, that builds character.
The Canterbury gods carried the game super hard, especialy Veratyr, and thanks to them the setting was by far the most developed of the trilogy, since the whole asterism stuff tends to be kinda handwaved and otherwise society and stuff tends to remain the same.
At least it was interesting in that regard since finding a chuuni game where you actually sympathize with the villain's goals without the need of a retarded sob backstory is super hard. They just had a shitton of experience behind them.
All in all, it was actually a good game most of the time even if I don't fully agree with the themes, because the main cast kind of comes out as braindead in comparison when you have antagonists explaining you why their plans are good and it makes sense when they do.
I still preferred trinity though, by some margin, Ragna is super boring and lacking in development compared to Ash. Vendetta was nice too but I barely remember anything about it anymore barring a couple of climaxes and Millie's route being godawful, but it's been five years.

Glenfarth and the rest of the 神祖 were a pretty good switch up in terms of Silverio's "light" antagonists. The concept of a light attribute protagonist wasn't executed that will in Ragnarok in comparison to Ash in the early parts of Silverio.

I dunno about that guy, but dropping something in common is.. common. You usually see pretty early how good the writing and so on is, and if there's not enough interesting stuff, then it's better to draw the line early. Backlog will never be cleared anyway.
It's quite important if you like to try out things a bit more wildly, instead of just blindly following ratings or whatever. And even though most games have more than one writer, the way characters are established and whatnot is actually one of the more important things for overall enjoyment.
