When I go to recent Fantasy/sci-fi releases, the fantasy releases are 95% litrpg and/or a part of a series. Commercial dreck that doesn't want to risk lower sales by making the books too depressing. Sci-fi a little better in that regard but still mostly happy escapism.

Contemporary literature is much better in that regard, but the moment you're looking for fantastical elements in depressing works you're shit out of luck.

It's a total moe-ge, albeit a dramatic, aesthetically pleasing one, so beware.
The relationships are pure 甘え, with most of the girls assuming the roles of either infants or mothers (or...both). The character development is nil until Shigure's route (the third), where you can tell that there's a new writer. And what little plot there is obeys the straightforward principle that "all happiness is eventually punished," which is a relatively common belief in Japan I believe, having arisen from some distortion of Indian teachings about cyclical time and karma, I guess. Otherwise the story is kind of nonsense.
Ouka's happy ending is so forced, even borderline creepy, that, noticing this, the creators of Snow found it befitting to add a joke omake game called "Dark Snow" where you basically turn into a ghost and rape everyone.
That said, in my opinion Snow has the attraction of being "naive art," like the main writer is a simple guy with few acquaintances whose life is filled with genuine spiritual feeling.

There's some melodrama, if you're into that. It just takes a while to get to and isn't supported by a sense that the characters have a strong bond due to having grown together and overcome obstacles, rather it's more like the drama is there because the magical setting somehow demands it.

Finished the Gore Screaming Show, Akane's route.

I had it on hold for a long time because I was too scared to finish it, but there actually wasn't a whole lot of gore. There are many scary parts, but there's only one truly gory scene on the path leading to the good ending, and there's an option in the settings to censor it. Even the word d*ck gets censored, to my amusement. And it's easy to tell if you're on the path to a good ending because a heart pops up on the screen when you make the correct choice.

The psychology of the characters is more central to the game than the horror. The subtle thoughts, feelings, and actions of the characters are depicted in painstaking detail. Since I'm a slow reader, the narration took a while for me to get through, but it was interesting to read. I liked Akane. She's very sweet, but impetuous and feisty, and she and the bad boy protagonist Kyouji are like a couple from a shoujo manga. In fact the first half of the entire route was like a "shoujo" story as it was full of teenage angst and school life drama.

I think I'll play Aoi's route next, since I usually like characters like her.

I download Tailon/Justice's stuff from Freenet, but it's a lot slower than using the torrents that get made and Freenet is terrible for retention so anything old is gone. And, like many private trackers, AB is a preservationist effort (including eroge - there's a spreadsheet with all titles that haven't been upload yet, divided by year and brand.)

If they allowed doujin games, they would have to come up with some criteria to decide what is and isn't worth archiving, or risk being flooded with low quality shit.

I did that in GazelleGames since they're pretty lenient when it comes to pc games, uploaded a bunch of loli doujin games and so did other people and now I think it has one of the biggest loli eroge collections I know.

I remember hearing somewhere that vn translators just get all the text in a script file and translate it in batch with no context, unless they've read the VN before on their own, which they usually haven't. All of them seem to carry the same main gimmick. That gimmick deals with heavy subject matters related to existentialism and escapism. It sets a scene of the protagonist, or the heroines, or both, facing any social problems they have in their life. After experiencing love with each other, they all came down to one solution: to lock themselves in their own world, away from the dark side of society. Only that, they can no longer experience loneliness and be forgiven. It is why the phrase "だめなおとなになりましょう" from the first game left so many impressions behind it, and it also reverberates to the next games in a similar way.

The negative side of society affected a lot of people. It is the indirect cause to the appearance of any neets, introverts, closet weaboos, those with no social status or relationship, or even lolicons and psychopaths. Unless they have a full mental breakdown, they always have to wear a mask to blend in with society. They keep on hurting themselves keeping that mask on, and it still slowly destroys their inside over time, because there were no other choices for them. This target audience is what this Lolita series are for. They are for those who experience loneliness and depression, for those who seek for salvation and forgiveness, for those who want to indulge in lust to break free from the path of crime.

Back to the vn themselves. They have that same gimmick and goal, but each of them cover up different philosophical topics. The order is at follows:

>2: The efforts of overcoming differences, both physically and mentally, between each other to seek for immoral love and happiness, and return something to life
>3: Everything is like two sides of the same coin. You need to find out carefully what you would want to do with those inside yourself, to share with your important ones
>4: "Everyone deserves a little bit of happiness", along with "The relation between happiness and physical/mental wealth"
>5: If you ever feel lost on the path of seeking truth, remember that there is always a place called home for you to come back to
>6: The provocation to break free and seek for freedom, after losing your only thread of reason to keep you alive
Each of them sets the readers in different scenarios, so this series still manages to keep its freshness over time. They also resonate inside each reader differently, depending on how much they can relate to each scenarios, or what they desire of in each game.

Sengoku got too sloppy in the latter half for me. The size of the cast worked to the games detriment with some characters literally appearing, getting fucked, then disappearing, the first third of the game is spent really focusing on a select group of heroines then half of them disappear until the finale, the X fandisc content felt as tacked on as it was, the climax was just the original Koihime Musous but with different characters, the mental gymnastics they use to justify the alliances and harems are somehow even worse than the ones in Koihime, it just kept letting me down. It does start ofF better than any of the other Koihime games, but it absolutely fails to keep that momentum going in my opinion. The game needed routes really badly, if it ever got a SKM style reimagining it could very well be the best Koihime game but as it is, the SKM remakes have it handily beat.

I did very much like the change that heroine events were tied into the story instead of giving you a limited number to select each playthrough though, and I'm fucking baffled they didn't implement that into the SKM remakes. I'll also probably never stop finding it funny that Kuon got cucked out of main heroine position by Shino.

This was pretty much why I prefer Sengoku over SKM. The heroine events in SKM were very out of touch with the story at times and felt off timeline wise because they are pretty much their own thing. The events in SKM were designed to be readable at almost any point of the story, while for Sengoku, they were limited to specific chapter intermissions. Because of this, the character events felt way more natural to me than the ones in SKM.

All you need to do is clear the game once for the Kakumei series except for Taimou, which is already unlocked in the beginning.

Yes, which is why I wish they had implemented them into the story like Sengoku Koihime did. It's something Sengoku definitely did better and I'm disappointed they didn't take that from it but Sengoku has issues of its own that Koihime doesn't have.

It would be nice if they went back to Sengoku Koihime after they are done with the remakes but we still don't have a date for the final Kakumei package.

フェミニストの僕としては、せめて小説版では彼女たちを救い、ティーンエイジのちょっぴりせつない心の機微を繊細なタッチで描いたさわやか和姦小説として全体を構成したかったのですが、それでは原作の魅力である。
"暗さ","狂気"―そして、その暗黒面を描いているからこその"輝き"、"愛"を表現できません。
おりしも編集氏からの依頼も「ゲロエッチでいきましょう!」とのこと。
ならばとワタクシ金月、心を鬼にしてフェミニスト精神を封印いたしました!女の子たちには原作同様ヒドい目に―特に人気キャラの新城さんには原作以上にヒドい目にあってもらっております。
「性処理の道具」とか「汗臭い」とか「淫乱女」とか......心にもない言葉の連発で、僕ァ書いてて辛かったですよ、ホント。
ところが。
できあがってみれば、「金月センセ、ストレス溜まってます?」「なンか昔、女にヒドい目にあわされたコトあるんですか?」「カノジョにいつもこんなコトしてるんですか?」――などと、編集氏に人間性を疑われる始末。
編集部の女性の方々からは『タックル』(電波人間だから?)などというホーリーネームまで頂戴し、なんだかとっても心外な今日この頃なのであります。

話は変わりますが――それにしても原作版「雫』、いいオハナシですよね。
すでに語り尽くされて今更な感もありますが、こういうゲームが発売できて、しかもキチンとユーザーに評価されるエッチーゲーム市場も、どうしてナカナカ捨てたモンじゃございません。
大型宣伝と有名誌のレビューだけが幅をきかせる一般ゲーム市場なんかよりも、ある意味よっぽど健全ですよね。
...内容はぜんぜん健全じゃないですけど。
ちなみに、本作・『雫』で一気に注目を集めたリーフ様は、その地位を不動とした「痕』に続くビジュアルノベル第三弾=「トゥーハート』を近日発表なさるとのこと。
今度は学園純愛ものとのことで......フェミニストな僕でも抵抗なく遊べそうです(笑)。
