You'll upgrade eventually, and when you do, 720p will look blurry on your new display and the window will appear too small to have legible text. According to Steam's hardware survey, 1080p makes up 64.81% of its 90+ million userbase, with 1360 x 768 coming in second at 10.22% and 2560 x 1440 in third at 6.23%. 4k isn't far behind, at 2.12%. All the lower resolutions are steadily declining, and I suspect the pace will increase as we enter the next generation of gaming. 4k is already the standard TV resolution, which console VNs will likely have to take into account next-gen.

Unless there's a complete lack of resources, there's really no excuse not to use free upscaling tech to appeal to a wider audience.

Dies Irae is a fault of how things get marketed in Japan. They know they can get people to buy the original version of a game, then add some shit to it and get people to buy it again, so it's not problematic to have two separate versions. You can't pull that bullshit here, though.

None of that applies to the English release. There were three releases of the game in Japan: the first version, Also Sprach Zarathustra, was unfinished and has no translation. The second version, which is complete and 18+ is Acta est Fabula.
Amantes Amentes is an all-ages version of Acta that has some side stories (mainly adaptations of drama CDs), a second ending to Rea's route, replacement scenes for the H-scenes that were removed, and some censoring of offensive language (censoring is only in the Japanese release).

The regular exe. Is that a mistake? The patch exe actually runs the game?
Curiously enough virustotal does not seem to like that exe, but I guess only the less reputable scanners found an issue with it.
Is it because it's an exe that by design messes with other files/executables or something?

Well. Any time I try to open the ADV tab in the options menu the game crashes.
Also. The game in Japanese suggested that I'd mess with the Direct 3D settings, so I gave that a go. And well, that didn't work and I restored all the settings to what they were before I am pretty sure. But now the resolution has been changed or rather it doesn't appear to go into true full screen anymore and it looks worse. Any idea how to fix that?
I guess I shouldn't have been messing with options I couldn't read or understand.

>> No.24986995

Wait. What fonts does the game use? I actually think it might be crashing because I am missing the font(s).

>> No.24987252

>>24986995
On the off chance that anyone else have had similar problems. I actually got it to work, and the problem was missing fonts. Something the Japanese error messages in no way implied.
But I figured I could install the fonts that Rance 6 uses and see if that'd improve anything. And it kind of did. It changed the engine crash error to an error complaining about lack of free RAM (even though I have like 14GB unused RAM available) and if I chose to ignore and continue anyway, all the non-menu text boxes were just empty. But that was still further than I got before I installed the Rance fonts.
So I tried to open up the ADV tab in the options again, and this time it didn't immediately result in an engine crash like all the other times I tried. Instead I got several of that memory error message in a row but after ignoring all of those I could see that one of the Rance fonts I installed was selected as the System font, which is presumably how I was able to avoid the instant engine crashes I got before.
The chosen ADV font however was blank. Empty. So I clicked on it to choose a font, which admittedly resulted in like a dozen of those supposed memory error messages, but ignoring all of those and scrolling the font list all the way to the top, I was able to choose one of the available fonts. And that solved everything. No more error messages of any kind and the game appears to working properly.
For now anyway. I hope this works.

Yes, but they used a smear filter called waifu2x, and an ancient iteration at this point. As you can see in this thread, current technology (ESRGAN, Fatality models) produces near hand-drawn results as long as the source artwork doesn't suffer from heavy compression. 720p art can be upscaled to 5k with no loss of detail. 800x600 CGs such as this one to 3200x2400. If you really wanted to, you could upscale 1920x1080 to 7680x4320, but current GPUs can't handle it without a large amount of splits that result in faintly visible seams.

Rance VI was upscaled from 640x480 to 1280x960. We had a discussion about this in a different thread where MG's results were compared to this one.

I'm not sure if you two are trolling. There's a pretty big difference. All the detail in the original 640x480 image is preserved in the ESRGAN one. Can you really not see that the MG one is lacking an outline around rance, and that the lightning lacks any detail whatsoever? What about the small gap between Shizuka's right eye and bangs? The edges on the book? The fine details on the hat?

Sometimes the internet makes me wonder.

>> No.24988761

>>24988475
I said that it's an observable difference. That in itself is huge I guess, but I just pointed out where it is most easily observed and said that you can clearly see how it's blurrier.
I still think the images are fairly similar though. One is just a bit worse than the other.

I don't know what to say. I won't call it good but I am not going to be particularly upset either. I recall there being worse examples of blurriness than that one though, but I don't know.

I'd like to point out that this clarity could be retained at 2560x1920 but was kept at the same resolution as MG's upscale for demonstration purposes. The difference is night and day. In the Photonflowers forums the aNCHOR rep said they couldn't release a patch for melodies because they couldn't have unmosaic'd genitals in Japan. Because that makes sense for the western release.
>We’ve also learned that western Visual Novel fans prefer to buy patches with the mosaics fully removed. We can’t simply remove mosaics from HCGs, because there is a law in Japan that prohibits fully uncensored artwork. It is true that there have been very few cases related to this law, but we have an established name in the industry and have many fans in Japan. Steam? Yeah. DMCA's are such a massive thing that nowadays almost every media company immediately acts upon a request being issued. In steams case they freeze the transfer of payments to the developer/publisher of the title being given a DMCA while they review the claim. If they find the claim to be true in basically any jurisdiction they'll remove the title from sale and refund the customers who purchased the title. Any further legal issues would be up to the claimant to pursue. The reason steam would do this and do it in a timely manner is because they want to be protected under the good faith doctrine. For example if you issued a DMCA to steam and they weren't to remove the title and you took the case to court, not only would the developer/publisher be involved in the case, Steam would be as well for willingly allowing theft to occur on their storefront.

Now I'm not saying in this specific case you'd win the court case, but Steam would remove the title from their storefront because in some states it is made clear that using someone elses work without their permission under any circumstances is considered theft and thus Steam would just not want to deal with the the problems that they'd be slammed with if it went to court in one of those states. There's no legal risk for sending a DMCA if it is reasonable to assume some sort of copyright violation occurred, this was affirmed in that big lawsuit with some media company and some youtuber.

So If I were him I'd issue a DMCA request to steam with various links to the blog that the fan-translation was hosted on since those are dated alongside >>24993356 gallery showing that it is a 1-1 copy of his fan-translation work, typos included and state that he never gave any company permission to publish nor sell his work. I would ask steam in that DMCA request to remove the title from the store. I sure as fuck wouldn't take the case to court though, but you shouldn't need to since it's so blatantly obvious that it was his translation and it's such a morally grey area that steam would err on the side of caution and just remove it unless the developer told steam they were willing to take it to court, which if they do you just drop the whole case and say it's not worth the trouble and there's literally nothing they can do legally to you if you just stop there.

>> No.24994409

>>24994292
You'd be right in most cases, but these sort of things get selectively applied. I don't think they'll do a single thing about it. If you tried to take it to court I imagine the company would counter-sue over you distributing a translation patch. You can only lose in this situation.

and by Morally grey, I meant legally grey. It's obviously not a morally grey area because you're literally using someone elses work without permission and selling it. That's scumbag to the max.

>>24994409
I'm pretty confident steam would act on it simply due to the fact of how obvious it is and even if they don't, you've made a genuine attempt at doing something and in this case there's no risk to sending the DMCA and asking steam to remove the title so long as you stop at that point and don't try to take it any further.

I'm not. I think they'd probably laugh at you because they know you can't do anything about it legally without getting fucked over for copyright violations yourself. It's not like you have some kind of moral high ground here.
>and even if they don't, you've made a genuine attempt at doing something and in this case there's no risk to sending the DMCA and asking steam to remove the title so long as you stop at that point and don't try to take it any further.

Nah, waifu2x was never that great. What you see in Rance VI is pretty much the standard result for low res artwork. Good waifu2x results are usually cherrypicked and still have major observable flaws and fall apart at higher integers. The images I've upscaled and shared have just been random CGs I've saved from recent VN related threads, showing the results with ESRGAN are universally good.

ESRGAN's 2D artwork capabilities are still fairly unknown outside of the Upscale Wiki/Discord. It's not necessarily just used for upscaling. You can run a Debanding/DeJpeg pass and clean up an image without increasing its resolution.

Of course it isn't, but the key terms there are "certain stories." As I said there are still a few games I'd like to read. But most of it doesn't interest me anymore. There's enough commonality across the majority of VNs that I think that's a fair statement. I'd rather read a novel.

It's not zero. You'd need two key members, a programmer who could handle inserting the script into the jp version and a translator to finish up the remaining cut content, and if the partial patch is any good, 3 routes are already done(I'm assuming that includes any cut content in them). But seeing how rare it is for the community to come together and fix an all-ages release, I wouldn't hold my breath on it. On the bright side quite a bit of people really like Muv Luv, so if there's a game where things might happen, I think this would be one of them. But, easier said than done.

Also, If I'm not mistaken, someone screenshotted the Muv Luv loc director saying something along the lines of it not being too much additional work, but his superiors asked him to prove the demand was there to justify doing it, which is probably business speak for fuck off since it's an unreasonable demand.

Well well all the title you stated above is all resulted from kickstarter and countless delay (Do they stated all their released will 5-7 years from the first moment they kickstart the project?)

And I'm sure 100% there will not be another Ages/FW/SP's one in the future for gameplay and plot titles especially if they stated "will be released 5-7 years from the kickstarter campaign over"

You are also literally grasping at straws now for your beloved VN company shitty project management planning.
Done with you both. Enjoy your credited MG points for this shilling.

Nope, they all placed estimates of like 1 to 2 years that obviously missed the deadline. That's why people bring them up, because they screwed up just as bad, technically worse since they should have been committed to that goal more.

I think most of hardcore JOP will rather pay full price to be play the game at release date than to pay $40-50 for 7 years old english translated game.

As for casual EOP, I find still hard to believe they will choose $50 Rance X rather than newly released $60 FF XVI.

Sadly, between MG, JAST, and Sekai Project, and the various other VN focused companies, Mangagamer is inarguably the fastest. Sure, bigger companies like NISA and XSEED are usually faster, but they also have more money to throw around. If you really want to be pedantic, you could even argue that MG is faster than those two companies because they release a title every month while those two companies don't. That's a silly argument though.

>>25099420
Final Fantasy is shit nowadays, but I get your point. Most VNfags are used to long waits for titles though; that's how it's always been.

>MG does not make research before make a deal ? if they as good and professional as you stated this issue will surely know before hand, is it?
That's because they can translate the series unlike the rest that get cold feet and decide not to. Or when they do they will self censor and remove scenes change wording around on what happens.
>NISA managed to do it with Falcom product and so does Idea Factory/Xseed/Marvelous etc.
The problem is MG is not the exact size of those companies. MG is a VN company not a Game company and a distributor at the same time. They are smaller and cater to the Hentai side which is way smaller. The VN audience buys 1k on average in VN's a great selling title is considered 4-10k that then sells well soon physical sets. If you think you could do better you can always learn a skill and go help out on the project.

There's a zero percent chance Valve would ever dig through someone's game archives, especially unprompted, it's obvious someone went out of their way to try to get the game banned by digging and finding something objectionable and reporting it. There's plenty of steam games with 0 byte adult patches with all the adult content loaded into the game, it would be weird for anyone to focus on something like Bokuten unless they're trying to sabotage MG in some way.

With 3 release out of beta, 3 releases in beta, and 3 releases (plus one DLC) 100% translated and edited, MG's Q3 and Q4 schedule might be pretty crowded. One of the three releases that's 100% translated and edited is Musicus, which was planned for a release this year. Even if you discount Rance Quest because of the reasonable possibility of additional delays, the DLC route, and Secret Project 4 because that hasn't started scripting yet, that's 7 possible releases for the rest of the year.

It might be within their next few releases after Hello Lady considering how things are progressing. I'd bet that and Aokana Extra will probably release before the end of the year assuming no engine work needs to be done.
>>25118334
They're probably going to stagger releases. If 7 secret projects is the most they'll announce this year, I think this will be the first time in a while with so few projects announced. This is likely because a lot of the current projects will spill into next year's releases. They probably have at least another few projects in the pipeline, but they've been announcing stuff closer to completion these days probably so people aren't waiting years like with Bokuten, Maggot Baits, Da Capo 3, and Rance.

Most likely they are going to move their heavy hitters out as soon as they can in fall and then begin moving releases out in Spring into Summer.
