haven't used anki really at all (can't seem to get on with it no matter what) so my vocab sucks for how long i've been learning, but i'd say my structural comprehension is actually pretty decent (if i know all the words in a sentence, i will probably be able to understand it)

up to now i've always done 'dedicated' learning, which is to say, forcing myself to stop at every unknown word and look it up, try to make sense of everything, etc., but it's really not very fun to do that all the time and as a result i often end up doing way less inputting than i need to be in order to progress & improve

was thinking of switching things up and just watching/re-watching a ton of anime raw (no subs at all) while only stopping to look up those words that caught my interest in some way or which i really wanted to find out the meaning of

advantage of this is that obviously it's pretty 楽. just sit and watch anime and take it easy; rediscover the fun of japanese which i've honestly lost sight of a bit (esp. lately now there's really no novelty to the process left since it has been going on so long.)

my big concern is that i'm just not gonna acquire new vocab this way, and my biggest weakness as far as jp goes (my shit vocabulary) is not really gonna get any better

appreciate any thoughts at all on this and whether or not it's a stupid idea/waste of time/etc.

I usually passive listen to what I have already actively listened to. And the things is, I listen to it A LOT. And by a lot I mean, I once passive listened to a 12-episode anime for a month straight. It didn’t bother me and I actually felt like I was making progress and understanding more. The obvious reason for this would be that I was learning from my active immersion and using that knowledge while passive immersing.

The reason I prefer listening to the same thing over and over is because I think repetition is key to language acquisition.

My only question is, is this counter-intuitive? Does it only “feel” like I’m progress but actually I would be better off listening to something new everyday?

I have come across many people who passive listen to audiobooks and actively watch anime or YouTube videos. Is there really no link between their active and passive listening?

I recently picked up a light novel I bought quite a while ago to recheck my progress. I’ve come to realize that despite passing the highest JLPT I am nowhere near “knowing” Japanese. Reading the first couple pages sent me back to my digital dictionary.

I’ve realized time and again, I want to learn Japanese. Is there a list of common words past n1? I find scraping through novels for new words frustrating and it’s hard to tell if those words are commonly used or not. Moreover, it kind of ruins the experience of the story. If anyone has a good resource for studying past n1, it would be greatly appreciated.
