I just finished my report regarding the japanese security policy since 1945 form the view of two neorealist theories.

I think Buck-Passing hits the spot, Japan will continue to strengthen its alliance with the USA but sill not participate in combat missions.

Not cultural, not economical but regarding the security, the USA is a valuable ally which up to now took much pressure of the japanese economy because they could concentrate on economic rather than on military power. Sure, since the 70s the japanese military got a major buildup. But USA is a perfect backup-plan when shit hits the fan in asia. That is as long as the USA doesn't become to demanding with Japans rolle in this alliance.

USA an Japan have a treaty which is very asymmetrical. USA has to protect them if they get attacked but if USA gets beaten up Japan doesn't have to do shit.

Sure, doesn't save Japan from taking hits when things get out of controll but they don't need to waste money on offensive military because the USA will take this part. They just have to defend themselfs until the USA cleans up everything.
