/j/ i really love historical novels, especially men in military and their lives, like things about the life of Alexander the Great etc. now recently i realized that i have never read anything about Japanese military and generally suck with Japanese history, can /jp/ recommend any good books i could pick?

Gai-jin by James Clavel
Mostly Fiction but its pretty good on its depiction on pre Meji restoration japan.

>> No.2457749

There's nothing worth knowing about Japanese history.

>> No.2457752

>books
Pfft, just watch Letters from Iwo Jima and you'll be golden.

>> No.2457776

>>2457747

hmm...I might as well pick it up, but according to amazon it has a lot of anachronisms and is focused on well... gai-jins.

>>2457749
and why is that?

sorry, i prefer books, they are more fun.

Also "Shinto" by Jean Herbert.
Its non-fiction but it gives a pretty good history of religion in japan- Shinto origions and the rise of Budism and Confusiouism. It also has most of the Shinto Storys about its various higher dietys in it.

Yeah It for the most part is told through the eyes of a English translator working in japan just after Perry rocked up and Let loose with his cannons. But it also Follows a Japanese lord giving you a good look at japans political and philisopical hirachys, and a Ronen in the early anti shogunate movment Giving you a good veiw of the samerai class and it dealing with the merchent and peasent classes.

>> No.2457801

Rather than Gai-Jin, I think you should read Shogun. Its far more better, although a little meandering sometimes.

Fucking Christ, do you have any idea how hard it is to read that?

Ugh. If you read the book how do you not know how to spell 'Ronin' 'Peasant' and 'Merchant'

ugh.. is it anything like the movie/mini-series?

I havent been able to find a copy of shogun.
Written by the same guy isn't it?

I couldn't sit through those. I hated those after like half an hour. I think that the book is far better than that show. But then again, I am more of a book person. Give it chance, it doesn't have the questionable acting/sfx/dialogue of the mini-series.

Yeah, James Clavel.

You can try reading Yoshikawa.

I'm very lazy, but I almost never make any mistakes and I automatically mentally adjust for them before they appear onscreen most of the time. It really doesn't take any effort at all.

>> No.2457836

Forget Gai-jin and Shogun. Horrible crap.

I suggest the book "Musashi" by Eiji Yoshikawa. Great historical fiction by one of the most famous Japanese writers of the genre! It's the story of the life of Miyamoto Musashi, one of the most famous samurai of the Edo period. Great writing that is a joy to read and gives you a lot of insight into Japanese history, art, culture, and the political climate of the time, as long as being a great story with great characters. Check it out!

I had to watch it in my first year Japanese class, back in 1998. I enjoyed it, but I haven't since seen it.

Maybe it's just me, but I find the show really hard to sit through, I tried recently.

Pssh, don't bother with this. Just play Brave Fencer Musashi. And Kojiro is way better than Musashi, anyway, so also read Fate/stay night.

Sarcasm.

I just read "So Sad to Fall in Battle: An Account of War".

Nonfiction, translated from jap to english, the book that Letters From Iwo Jima is based on. Basically all you could ever want to know about General Kuribayashi and the Battle of Iwo Jima. Definitely recommend it if you're at all interested in the Greater East Asia War. Also, found it at local public library in a small town in South Florida, so it shouldn't be too hard to acquire.
