Ok, a lot of people give the AJATT method shit for not being "practical". That is a big excuse and you should feel bad. I think the problem is people do not realize just how simple employing the AJATT method actually is. You do not have to ostracize yourself from your world to accomplish Japanese fluency. In many ways, I'm sure some of you are already doing this in a small way. There are some tips I can give you. I want to keep these posts as "non-blog"-like as possible, since you don't actually give a shit about my own background and successes.

1. It helps to have some background first: Anime-fans who have been watching subbed shows, import gamers, people who listen to music with Japanese-language vocals. They are at an advantage. A small one, but every single thing HELPS.

2. Before you dive into kanji, get some listening momentum. Listening is going to be your #1 priority right now. Get anime/tv with soft-subs, and TURN THE SUBS OFF. Try watching stuff that you've seen before, first, so that you have an idea of what is going on. Good example: The new Dragonball Z remake is out. I watched the entire series as a kid (lol FOXkids anyone remember that?) in English, so a second-time through in Japanese is definitely not impossible.

3. Listening!!! Again, I can't stress this one enough. Khatz (the AJATT guy) suggests setting a goal over the course of two years. In the next two years, aim to have listening to 10,000 hours of Japanese. Yes, 10,000. I just hit 700 hours, averaging about 10-12 hours a day since the end of January. I could do better, and every moment I realize I'm not listening to Japanese, I get back to it in any way I can.

4. How to get listening constantly: You aren't at the computer all day, but when you are, you should be listening to TV or music in Japanese. When you aren't at the computer, bring the Japanese with you, via CD or ipod or whatever. If you can't do that, buy a CD player or ipod. When I go to hang out with my friends, I bring my mp3 player and put it in one ear. You don't even have to ACTIVELY listen. Once you grind enough hours, you'll have a breakthrough, and you'll start picking up more than just random sounds...you'll start hearing small bits of words...then you'll eventually hear phrases. You may even understand them and not just how to say what they said. Around this time, you'll probably get excited about your progress, and it'll serve to motivate you further.

5. If you don't have money, get a job and then spend your money on things that will help you on the road to fluency. Do NOT spend them on textbooks. Spend them on things you like doing. Japanese-language manga. Anime. If you don't have an ipod yet or some mp3 player, buy one, then fill it to the bring with cum...I mean Japanese stuff XD. Sorry, but I can't be serious 100% of the time.

6. Some useful firefox tips: Uninstall firefox, install firefox japanese-language version. Install the Rikaichan extension. Install the Kanjilish extension. That is all you need right now. Learn how to use both.

You should start with this. A lot of the other things I can tell you (and really, all of the above) can be found on the AJATT website, but clearly none of you are reading it past maybe 1 or 2 pages. If you read the entire site, you'd have seen how it makes sense. Learning Japanese isn't difficult at all. You only THINK it is.

Consider that...or you could start your quest NOW. Good luck anon, and GANBATTE! Always Ganbatte. Imagine it is this Cirno saying it to you when you think you can't do it. You CAN do it. I believe in you, Anon.

Really!? For someone who can't read any kanji and is just starting out, this is your suggestion to them? The last thing /jp/ needs are more "What does this error window say?" threads.

Go advertise your site somewhere else faggot.

I don't have the dedication for this shit anymore. Most anime is subbed a few days after it comes out, the only VN I want to play is Umineko, and I play less and less JRPGs. I guess if you want to live in Japan, that'd be motivation enough, but I have no plans to do so.

There are 17,520 hours in two years. That'd mean I'd have to be listening to Japanese more than half of the time. This will not work.

This is for like most dedicated people. Curious though, where should I start getting listening material? Don't say music because I have a fuckton. Recommend somewhere I can get some listening materials.

>> No.2453973

Actually, another effective way is just playing a game in Japanese that you've played in English. MMO's would be best, since that would force you to both read and communicate in Japanese. Learn katakana and hiragana first, then do this. Hell, you could even play the Japanese version of Pokemon, since it's all in hiragana.

It's the cheapest alternative to actually going and living in Japan.

>implication that one should not use textbooks

Good post until here. I understand how the AJATT business works-- it's not rocket science. Immerse yourself as much as you can. However, I absolutely hate when AJATT users/Khatz tells you "hurr dont use textbooks" "DONT TAKE the jlpt" "dont grind kanji" "IN FACT DONT EVEN LEARN HIRAGANA HARF DARF DURHFUHFF"

DO IT. How is reading Japanese not part of immersing yourself? You do a disservice to yourself if you don't learn grammar in a structured way. I am also curious as to where I can obtain some stuff to listen to besides music. Don't get me wrong though I still think the AJATT attitude is obnoxious.
