It's not really a "danmaku" so I dunno if it'd go over so well. It's a super-fast shooting game designed for one purpose and that's score competition. A simple scoring system (shoot enemies, pick up points) lets anybody pick it up and play, but it's not easy by any means.

There's also a hacked ROM with "Zankai mode" enabled, which is a mode that was in the game coding but not used for some reason, where you get a bunch of lives (50 I think) and the enemies shoot deathbullets, which quickly fills the screen in what is probably the hardest shooting game mode I've ever seen.

Scarlet Netherworld is pure mindfuckery. I can pass it by lining up where the two side streams will cross and just inching up above that spot, then completely ignoring the current wave and focusing on the downward bullets of the next wave. I somehow live long enough to capture it even though my instincts are screaming "YOU ARE GOING TO DIE!"

Scarlet Shoot is, unfortunately, almost an auto-bomb. The semi-random nature of the shot spread means that quite often, you will get trapped (and Scarlet Meister is EVEN WORSE in that regard). The best I can manage is to start towards one of the corners, minimally dodge around the first two five-way spreads, and hopefully be near, but not at, the middle when the triple shot is launched. If you let the five-way corner you for the triple, you have to bomb.

If you like the taste of Gaiden, you're going to enjoy G Darius.
Also, Darius Gaiden protip: If there's a big enemy onscreen with a ball on it's head, shoot the ball, not the enemy. IF you shoot it and then touch it after the enemy drops it,, you can capture the enemy and have a big slave ship for awhile.

I don't see what's wrong with G-Darius music, honestly. Darius Gaiden might have that awesome warbling voice playing in the background as well as one of the most soothing boss music I've ever heard, but Zuntata seems to have allowed full play to their own brand of experimental music only with the development of G-Darius. Some of my all time shmup music faves, like Kimera II and Adam, can be found in it.

DDP stage 3 boss is my favorite STG boss. Lots of parts to destroy, lots of variety of patterns.

If you wanna go classic, the Ray* series is pretty good, Rayforce and Ray.....something.

The idea is top down shooter, with a secondary to bomb targets below you.

Also interesting, unusual, and somewhat patterned is Silvarion

There's other Psikyo shooters as well, Gunbird is very traditional, 5 stages 3 bombs style bullet-hell, Strikers 1945, they've got a bunch.

Giga Wing was AWESOME too, by the way. Capcom game.

I'll crush you all at MAME Salamander, none of you stand a tiny chance on the NES version (playing a game for almost 2 decades will do that)

I haven't noticed, but yeah I always see patterns used here and there. People say that Utsuho first spell card is very similar to a DDP boss with giant fireballs. I think they are tribute to those games, not intended to copy them.

after failing earlier in the thread I gave DDP another try

this is actually the only time I've cleared DDP without getting the loop (Every time I seem to run out of bombs on the stage 5 boss then miraculously unintentionally chain stage 6 for the 330 chain requirement)

why the fuck does it say stage 6 instead of 1-ALL? That upsets me.

Most of the other aircrafts' sub-weapons and bombs are quite original and in accord with the air force each country, but nothing beats the Flying Pancake to me. It fires homings shots on default, its sub-weapon is a laser which at the highest level boasts an amazing breadth and destroys every enemy bullet coming in contact with it and as a bomb he calls forth two Flying Wings to serve as a shield. Speaking of its sub-weapon, it turns the fight with Gliath into a cakewalk.
