Theoretically, what would be better when reviewing mining words;

Say you do your review, and you come across the word 笑顔。

Normally one would say in their mind "smile, smiling face" in english and associate 笑顔 to that english translation, so my question is, what would be better between the two?

1. Trying to explain what 笑顔 is in japanese in your head (i.e saying 笑っている顔なこと、etc) as if a japanese speaker is asking you to describe what 笑顔　is.

or

2. "painting" a picture of a smiling face in your head, no words, no translation, just a smiling face?

Hi guys! This is my first time posting so I'm not sure if this has been talked about before. A year ago I finished the IB Ab Initio Japanese course and I have no idea how to transition into further learning. Ab Initio has little to no converstional speaking, no audio aspect and instead focusses on purely on writing and reading.

The course is supposed to take you to about n4/n3 level in reading and writing over about 13/14 months but its so packed full that you have to focus on learning the content that gets you the grades you need rather than what you need for true understanding of the language. I can only offer context for those in the UK, but the Ab Initio Japanese exam is significantly more difficult than the GCSE Japanese exam but the course length is at minimum a year shorter.

As a result i never learnt about counters/radicals/countless other foundational information because it was either glossed over, not mentioned, or I had to sacrifice it to focus on more complex areas. From what I've seen online from others it seems like a pretty universal problem for former ab Initio students. I'm in a position now where my levels in speaking, writing, listening and reading are at completely different places and I have no idea what the best approach is going forward. Are there any other former ab initio students who continued learning after high school who have experience bridging the gap?

So I feel like 70%+ of new cards in Tango N4 I'm failing the second day. Eventually I get them, but I almost rarely get away without at least 1 or 2 lapses out of the gate. Anyone have any tips for how I can decrease my failure rate early in the card? Feels silly to just know the day before I'm going to fail it in 24 hours. Never seems to stick around that long in my brain with 1, 10 interval..

I feel like there's not enough discussion about how bad some folks memories are lol, and how to overcome it and still feel successful. I have some seriously shit days. The worst part is, it makes it so I essentially can't add - if you get like almost all your cards wrong one day, then the next day you have 15-20 new cards to do on top of that, your numbers go up fast.

Maybe @mattvsjapan will throw us a bone and think of some tweaks for if you suck early on. I feel like I can't add 20 a day reasonably because I simply fail too often to do so at the current recommended redpill anki settings
Worked for N5 mostly, N4 seems too complex per card I think.

Really? I thought it was decent overall but I found it quite lacking in many respects. The second entry was honestly not very good at all if you ask me.

Compared to what Kurosawa managed to do in less than 3 hours with the story of Ran, it really didn't feel very epic either when you consider its 10 hour running length.

Again, I didn't dislike it but right now I'm struggling to wrap my head around the 8.5+ IMDB ratings.
