It conveniently solves the issue of people using proxies to spam the score of a post. It also prevents the Gaia crew from upvoting shitty art. Basic members can still maintain favorites. I'm not seeing much of a downside here.

Not exactly. All posts were reset to favourite count from privileged users. So while a lot of images dropped from large numbers to absolutely nothing, images that were favourited by priv+ users still have a score.

Rounding down, there are about 700 priv+ users out of 100,000 total (and who knows how many are even active). That's less than 1%, so I don't think it's -that- easy to get a contributor account. You have to care enough to put forth the effort to contribute 100+ good quality images, at least, and if you don't care that much then why be worried about scores? (alternatively you can get a higher level account by having a friend on staff, but whatever)

The new system simply makes every individual vote mean more than before, the quality of the popular page has definitely gone up since the new system came into play.

On Danbooru, the score system was mostly used to sort images by popularity, I think. Before the priv+ voting change was put in place, the "popular" images were anything H related, really, and that's not what the staff want.

Personally, I don't think the site needed such a change, but I'm not displeased with it thus far, either. It's not that important.
