I recently downloaded The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, just to try my hand at something from the series. It seems that I'm failing quite miserably, barely even making it to the last two levels without running through all of my continues, and getting running into shit before I expend all of my bombs.

What kind of advice do you have for beating this shit? I can't even imagine what a clusterfuck the difficulties above Normal would be like.

Practice, memorize, use your bombs generously. If you haven't figured it out, hold shift to slow down and weave inbetween dense bullets.

Hold shift for focused movement.

relax mind, take it easy, understand that danmaku is a state of mind

failing that; cheat by looking up some replays on youtube

Yeah, I actually didn't know such a thing existed until I saw the demo video.

If it comes down to grinding the game until I memorize patterns in attacks, I'll probably just give up now, because I don't see how that would improve my chances at playing future games from this series.

There's a deal of memorizing, but a lot of it is building up reflexes and becoming more aware of bullets on screen. This all transfers over to the other games.

Looking at replays is hardly cheating. Also, go to >>2441627 since it's the exact same thread.

It helps. The patterns from game to game are often similar, the hitboxes are pretty consistent, and you'll build up muscle memory as well, so you know exactly how often you need to hold the button to move a certain distance or how quickly you should tap left/right to stream.
