I want to know the CLASSICS. The REAL ones. The ones you remember the most!

This year i played two old visual novels, yume miru kuzuri and clannad and i was in awe. They were both very good. So I wanted to find old visual novels (pre 2012 atleast) that you consider the classic ones, the best ones. Eroge is fine but only if there is a lot of story. Non-eroge good too. I want good story that makes you think. So which ones do you recommend?!

No, you're talking about the 360 version which had a huge downgrade in art style. Read the original, but also download the 360 soundtrack arrangement since it's fantastic. I believe you can also play the original PC version with HQ music. Google "Himmel edition" too, it's a recent set of QoL changes which you can drop if you prefer the original (it appears better to me but I haven't fully tested yet). You'll need a guide to get the true end, by the way.

Kira Kira, Forest, Sharin No Kuni, Sekien no Inganock, Symphonic Rain, Tokyo Alicel, and ef - a tale of the two are some lesser known ones I'm really fond of. Some obvious ones are Saya no Uta, Fate/Stay Night, Tsukihime, and Planetarian, but chances are you already know about those.

This topic happens to be in my knowledge

Back in the day there was literally a point in my life where I sat back and though to myself "Man, I've read all the translated visual novels out there, hope we can get another one or two next year" (this isn't considering the absolute shit VNs that were translated at the time, like Water Closet, that is about literal shit)
Now such a statement seems ridiculous, it's neat to see all the translated visual novels that we have now.

Back in the day, we only had things like Peach Princess or J-list/JAST for translations. I remember referring to games as Bishoujo Games the most instead of eroge. Visual Novel was still used as was sound novel. I got my visual novels from Something Awful/Newgrounds and MEGASTORE 99 (the form from Simgirl RPG, had some of the first VN torrents on the internet there). I wonder if the old Something Awful Visual Novel reviews are still out there, they had reviews for all the games translated at the time and were full of the comedic style of the internet at the time.

People in this thread already listed the /jp/ classics and essentials, so I'll list some of my past favorites.

Castle Fantasia 2 (simple game with a neat tactical game attached to it, only 1 H scene per girl, also released for dreamcast)
Brave Soul (a dungeon crawler RPG with visual novel elements, one of my favorites as a young lad but might not have aged well. CGs are good though, the anime opening gives me nostalgia https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZ6tmVIzTW4))
Let's Meow Meow (nothing all too special, but a classic for the time as catgirls were the new hotness. Has a special place as the first entry in the vndb https://vndb.org/v1 )
Kingdom (I forget the real name of this but that's what it was referred to at the time, https://vndb.org/v110 , has an interesting gameplay system about holding a daytime job and exploring the town, has about 20 girls to romance)
Utawarerumono (UnderWaterRayRomano, Another good classic, also has tactical gameplay elements to it, as you can see I quite liked visual novels with gameplay elements. This one seems to have a lot of console releases, I think it may even be on steam now)
True Love (a REAL CLASSIC, and one of the REAL "dating games" out there. Set your schedule and level up your stats to romance different girls and explore the town and experience neat events)
Nocturnal Illusion (this one has some serious atmosphere to it and I remember it quite fondly. Get stuck in a mysterious mansion and explore to discover the routes of the girls and the mystery of the mansion)
Tokimeki Check-in! (nothing special here, but I enjoyed it at the time. Something about managing a hotel. Can get stupid without a route guide, but the same can be said for a lot of classic games IMHO)

That's about all I remember for now that I'd consider recommending. There are quite a bit more, but I question how interested you may be in games like Do You Like Horny Bunnies 2 and The Sagara Family. I pretty much played all the routes of such games, but that's also all we had at the time. Considering what we have now, I'd say you can skip them.

You can find more of the classics for play at
https://tss.asenheim.org/
They have True Love and Nocturnal Illusion, these are fun for the PC98 style graphics

Kira kira is great, but be warned that it's way darker than the average vn at parts. This may be a plus, but it also comes out of nowhere, so prepare yourself. God damn, that one ending did a number on me. If you've read it, you probably know what I mean.

Honestly, I never even was able to replay it to finish the real route. Holy shit it was bad

Well since you've read Clannad which is often considered peak Key (depending on how you count Little Busters), and Key is a case of "Read one you read them all" you can safely ignore most of those. Yume Miru stands well in its own right so I'm going to assume you like things that are more character driven and heart wrenching.

I recommend the 2007 release Sekien no Inganock. It's about a man who works illegally as a doctor in a shithole city where any crime is punished by death, and fights terrible beasts wreaking havoc while trying to solve the mystery of an upper-class girl who ended up in the slums.

If you want something long and brutal, the 2010 release Subarashiki Hibi (released in English as Wonderful Everyday Down The Rabbit Hole) is an excellent read about mental illness, drugs, and psychosis. Unlike YMK which had them presented as a problem to overcome, SH is surreal and horrifying and everything goes horribly wrong.

This is slightly over your cutoff but 2012's House in Fata Morgana is an absolute masterpiece. It's a story of a man isolated from the world and a witch's curse. Hard to say much about the story without spoiling it but it's a very well-written gothic thriller/drama with a rare example of a main male protagonist who isn't a faceless pussymagnet or an overblown chad.

Those are ones that I personally enjoy, but if you want something a bit more feelgood and comfy before it hits the fan I recommend 2007's Himawari.

I noticed this with Edelweiss and Bokuten too, but Overdrive is strangely good at making protagonists with dead waifus compelling. Their grief and how they deal with it is very relatable, even if I'm just a lonely otaku wizard in training. Bokuten gets extra points in this front because the waifu is dead before the game even starts, and it's not a spoiler that she's dead. Edelweiss doesn't do it nearly as well as Kira Kira, but even in there, it was compelling.

As far as overdrive goes, I really like Deardrops, though I haven't read it in years. It's slightly more vanilla, but has a good balance of drama and SOL compared to Kira Kira. If you haven't read it, it's worth a go, especially since I never see it talked about and it has a full translation.

And yeah, they do write the post-death scenes really well, but god it hurts my heart. I just wanted some cute music anime vn...

I've read Clannad, Little Busters, and Rewrite. Clannad and Little Busters are pretty similar plot structure wise, but the themes are different enough that both are worth reading. Rewrite has some elements of the Key formula, but they are less blatant and the VN mostly does its own thing.

>>24299872
Oh, I like Deardrops too. I think that Kira Kira is easier to sell as a "classic" VN while Deardrops is more of a traditional underdog success story, but I think Deardrops does do it pretty well.

Hey Clannad brothers, I have a question for you guys.
In anime I hated that:
>Tomoyo and Kyou beat the shit out of Sunohara every time they see him
>Sunohara is a retard and is used as a comic relief in every episode except that one with his sister
>Fuuko and Nagisa act like kindergarten children
Does VN suffer from the same (arguable, but for me they are) flaws? Thanks in advance.

>> No.24315320

>>24313405
If I remember correctly, yes, Sunohara is still mostly the butt of the joke unless you go to the route where you hang out with him and his sister, and Fuuko and Nagisa are still largely immature. I haven't watched the anime though, so I'm not sure how much better or worse the VN is in this regard.
