the latter has had pretty bad translators in the past, whereas the former one sometimes inserts references to either really old anime/manga or makes puns that are impossible to translate (that are not usually laugh-out-loud-level funny, but more like "oh i get it" stoic laugh-type funny, and that rarely ever actually affect the flow of the story)

fuck off dude i aint never trolled

the first video isn't perfect but it explains a lot of the fundamentals about the language and serves as a good intro to japanese for total beginners who know nothing.
let's learn japanese uses skits to demonstrate the basic grammar of japanese in a very easy to understand way via the power of comprehensible input. it's really a great resource, with its only real weakness being its length.
vjg's explanations are incredibly clear (better than anything you'll find in any other free guide), partly thanks to the fact that the person who made it is a native japanese speaker with an education in linguistics and also partly thanks to its abundant use of visual illustrations, and it teaches a lot of essential things that llj unfortunately never gets to.

if you watch those videos you will know everything you need to know to get started guaranteed

or you can read the guide written by a korean who sucks at japanese which was full of glaring errors that other people had to fix for him. ur choice.

when you want furigana to appear on your cards with the japanese support add-on, you would do it like so:
{{furigana:Expression}}

is there anything like that in the card styling?

if not, you could make two separate expression fields, one with the pitch info and one without, and have the latter on the front of your card and the former on the back

alternatively, maybe deleting all the javascript shit on the front styling would work (or it might just break everything who knows)

i read his guide when i first started and was continually having to refer to other resources like the dojg to clear things up since his explanations were so unclear.
it's also full of his (often ignorant) rants about the language and towards the end you can see he got lazy and couldn't really be bothered anymore.

watching vjg after finishing tae kim i was blown away by how easy it was to understand by comparison and a lot of the things that left me scratching my head in bewilderment in tae kim suddenly became clear.

The grammar point that's causing me to smash into a brick wall and stop progress.

I have plenty of motivation normally to continue my self-study of Japanese. But every now and then, I get hung up on a certain point here and there, and it stops me dead in my tracks. For reference, this is from Genki II, chapter 15. It's based on the volitional form, which I understand easily enough. But then it's adding と思っています。 As I understand it, this is a helper verb for intention... yet previously, I learned ~つもり, which also seems to express intention. It also seems easier than trying to go through the whole volitional form. So my question ultimately is, what's the difference?

Edit - I think casual verbal affection/support/encouragement is my specific concern - in English, I regularly tell my friends stuff like "I believe in you, I care about you, you got this, you can do it, you're awesome, you'll get through this, hope you have a great day/week, etc."

i wouldn't, because

it's not really hard to learn those words, and then see them used in context, and then pick up on it. also, i don't find those words comedic other than i guess "clock" as sort of old timey. nuance isn't universal and language is always interpreted individually. ask 10 different native english speakers how much "a few" is and you can get quite a few different answers.

you can't read with your peripheral vision past the distance of 3-5 characters away from your center of focus its been proven in speedreading studies. the center of the screen is way further than that which means even if you can vaguely sense the outline of some letters, you can't actually read or process the text as meaningful. right now open an anime with english or japanese subs, fix your focus directly at the center of the screen, don't let it move, and press play. watch how it's impossible to actually read the bottom text unless you shift your eyes there

that would only happen if you're thinking 'don't look at the subs' so your brain is still looking out for the subs. you have to think 'look at whats going on on-screen'. the face of the character talking, the scenery, etc. soon your eyes will naturally go there, just like they would if you were watching raw, instead of to the bottom to read the subs (until its necessary to go back and check them)
>when you are actually watching something with subs in your native language you don't even realise you are reading them anymore once you are absorbed in the experience of watching
not true i definitely notice when i'm looking at the subtitles even watchin stuff dubbed and subbed in english because there is slightly more cognitive load, the on-screen action seems less vivid, and i can sense myself shifting back and forth between text and screen. and with japanese dubbed and english subbed there's the added feeling of disconnect between trying to process two languages at once. on the other hand, when i watch the way i'm describing, it feels indistinguishable from watching raw, no english is being processed at all (except on the rare occassions english pops up in the middle of the screen to translate a sign or letter or something). the only difference is visually a vague blur of text at the bottom that i can't actually read till i rewind and choose to shift my focus downward

>yui is holding quitar after forgetting how to play after studying so hard

you don't keep them from moving. i just said that as an experiment to show anon that you can't read everything in your peripheral vision if its too far away from your center of focus. in practice of course you move your eyes while watching, just in coordination with whats actually happening in the show rather than constantly to the bottom of the screen, same as if you were watching raw

well i finished this. it ended pretty strong, the last 2-3 episodes were good but the rest not so much. if you're gonna do a sherlock holmes knock off u need to have some fun mysteries which this gosick lacked. basically all of them sucked dick.

the supporting characters were complete fuckin ass too. basically the only strong part of the show was the relationship between the mcs. the main plot is pretty retarded and nonsensical too which wouldnt be an issue but the show kinda does take itself seriously so it is.

oh and another annoying fucking thing is the male mc screaming biktorikaaaaaaaaaa 10 times per episode. it's literally said 365 times in the 24 episodes and in 1 episode he screams it 20 fucking times, it's so grating that i rage quit the show cause of it a few months ago and just now picked it up. anyways guess it's a 5 or 6 out of 10

I realized earlier today that i don't think I'm actually reading japanese, I'm looking all the words in the sentence then making an educated guess as to what the sentence means from the context. I'm essentially ignoring the participles.
