How often do you really need to recall yomi in a vacuum anyway? This is one area where anki doesn't correspond to reality very much. Just read more and if it's a relevant enough kanji your familiarity will solidify on its own. Otherwise you can go the masochistic route and anki harder to train this particular "skill".

If you play japanese in the background nonstop your brain will just categorize it as noise in the long term. Not only will you just filter it after your session goes on for a certain length, you will eventually develop a mental habit of ignoring japanese, killing your interest and responsiveness to it and also affecting your ability to focus when you actually do try to pay attention to something japanese.

Just completely ignore vocab for the time being and grind sentence structure. You can even practice building japanese-structure sentences using english nouns and verbs. IE Iはlunchをate. If you can become firm in your sentence structure then you will basically acquire vocab automatically from subs by interchanging the nouns, verbs, etc from the subs with the unfamiliar vocab in the dialogue.

How do you grind sentence structure? At the moment I think grammar is probably my weakest point. I'll often find I can read almost every word in an entire sentence or actually the entire sentence and still be somewhere between fuzzy and having no idea what it means.

Anyone also has problems with Yomichan extension in Google Chrome while highlighting words via middle mouse button? It started last week with no reasons and I just can't fix it.
Google Docs crashes and reloads document as soon as Yomichan pop-up window appears. Selecting words with other default option "Shift" button works fine.
This issue only happens with Windows 8.1 for me on several machines with different versions of Chrome installed, even "fresh" installations on virtual machine. No problems on Windows 10.

If you're having problems understanding sentences then you've either forgotten your particles and need to refresh, or you haven't practiced them enough to have a clear idea of what they mean, or the sentence just uses things you haven't learned yet. Grammar is the area where japanese is the most distant from english, you can't treat it like vocab and just anki particle definitions or infer on context, grammar can only be trained through reading/listening and writing/speaking sentences using japanese grammar, even if you substitute words themselves. If you identify a certain particle or rule you have trouble with you train it likewise through sentences or phrases that use it.

the idea is that doing anki reps takes less time and is less annoying because you dont have to interrupt your input as much. and i think i agree with that for the first 7,000 to 10,000 words or so. but after that, you end up "looking up" words in anki (doing reps) much more frequently than you actually encounter them in your media. so once one gets to that point, i agree with you

I feel like Anki has more use at intermediate level than beginner.
At the beginner level the most basic words are common enough you can just remember them by reading every day.

But at intermediate you encounter words frequently enough that you should probably remember them, but not frequently enough so you keep forgetting them. Anki fills than gap.

Depends on how good your lookup method is doesn't it?
If you're using a mouseover dictionary then getting a "rep" in while reading takes about as much time as doing a rep in anki. Meanwhile everything you read without problem were like extremely fast reps as well. Reading can be extremely productive but the hard part is finding something of the appropriate skill level, whereas just grinding anki nonstop is mindnumbing but convenient.

Is there a general strategy for remembering the core2k deck? I lowered the amount of new cards down to 15 but still feel like only a little sticks. I’ve been trying to notice what the kanji means then try to remember the pronunciation. Remembering kanji is easier in English than remembering the word itself in Japanese for me. it's normal u are gonna suck for a long time so get used to that. remembering kanji gets easier when u know a few thousand words and have an idea of what the readings are for the kanji in those words. plus when u start getting input seeing the words in actual context helps them stick and their meaning solidify.

I passed the N2 in 1998 and then took the N1 in '99 and failed. This was when there were only N1-4 and now I see there is N5 as well. Did they re-structure the tests to spread over 5 levels instead of 4 since they made that change? I am curious to know if the N1 is harder now, easier or the same?
