I quickly realized learning to write japanese is completely pointless.
As long as you know how to read and keep that skill always honed, you're set.
Speaking is infinitely easier in comparison and you just practice a little before going to japan if you truly need to.
My brother understands english 100% but since he stopped writing and speaking decades ago, he can't do it anymore. So why would I spend hours writing kana and learning kanji strokes if I will never be in a situation that I need to write all the time? I WILL forget it eventually.

I actually only want to learn japanese to play videogames.
As a tourist in japan, even with shit pronunciation and speaking so slow I sound retarded, they will appreciate the fact I at least can communicate properly. It's not like they expect much from gaijins to begin with

So, I’ve put 0 hours into Japanese so far, as I am close to fluency with another language, and am planning on starting Japanese in the next couple of years when it’s more convenient for me

When reading and speaking using kana, does it work sort of like Latin languages where certain combinations of characters can mean different things? Or is it like Kanji where each character has a set meaning that doesn’t vary much. Because I know both forms of kana have about 40-50 characters

I'm really new to this. Went straight on leaning hiragana via duolingo and it seems I have some difficulty remembering the words because they are all over the place but I can already recognize all the hiragana characters as well as write most of them. Stopped before the Katakana lessons and went to memrise and it seems much better better especially on making you learn new words but paused right now because was perplexed about memrise using the one stroke RI for write or click tests while their videos and some of the tests show the two strokes.

Is learning hiragana and katakana via these apps okay? Or am I missing something?

Goddamnit, I feel like I'm drowning in these anki lessons. Trying to keep motivated, but working for 10 hours a day on work days as a programmer is mentally exhausting. If I take a day off of anki, that just means even more fucking words to catch up on later. And I'm at the point now where nothing feels like it's properly "sticking" anymore, but I can't tell if I'm just frustrated due to the above.

the problem with quizmaster is that he was so defensive. if you actually read his site all of his theory is extremely well thought, he is constantly making concessions, and encouraging you to think things through yourself.
like he says that sentence cards are effective, but ultimately insufficient on their own and have almost all of their usefulness covered in anime cards. however, if you told him sentence cards were better than anime cards on djt, he'd flip his shit and call sentence cards worthless pieces of shit for dekinais.(don't do sentence cards btw)

the point is he's making an assertion as if it is obviously scientifically rigorous. you could say that "reading is more about visual pattern recognition than language so having an image allows you to more strongly train that". who knows if that's true (i just made it up but it sounds real enough) and obviously people have learned a large amount of vocabulary using both methods so it's incredibly difficult to prove either way. i know it's not as good marketing, but it's much more honest to just be like "yeah this is how i like doing anki cards/learning japanese/etc"
