They should just take kanji off of the JLPT. Unlike grammar, vocab, and hearing/speaking, kanji is something that will be completely automated by computers in the next decade. It's both the biggest time waster and the least useful part of japanese study. Unless you aspire to be one of those japanese novelists who make kanji puns all the time there is zero point in learning it.

It's more important to learn to differentiate kanji and recognize what's going on in it then just forcing your way through a core deck where you will just associate a general kanji shape with the English word.

I did RTK and while I can't really say if it did in fact help me to memorize things the only benefit that I feel is that I can produce kanji from keywords. But if I see a kanji I often can't connect it to its meaning because I'm used to the reverse process of producing the kanji from meaning, not producing the meaning from seeing the Kanji.
It turns out there's a difference

Because of years of anime watching I'm way, way better at listening to japanese than reading it. There's a lot of vocab that becomes completely inapplicable for non-assisted reading because of kanji.
