And it's actually a little bit weird because I know that when I was first getting into otaku culture I knew exactly who my favorite characters were but now all the characters are starting to melt into variations on a theme.

I used to think that Azuma's database theory of otaku was total bullshit because characters can't simply be reduced to their constituent parts, you have to appreciate them as a whole, in the full context of their work - but then time went on and I became the same kind of "animalized" faggot that I used to hate.

The newer Madoka stuff is trash and fans still like the original. It's just the KF fans that worship their dumb little series and act like some major defilement happened, as if staff on anime don't change all the time. A similar thing happened with gdgd fairies, and it was mostly fine. People just turned on it and started hating it for super flaky reasons, and it really feels like they are going to look back on it in 10 years and realize they just fell for the hype.

Another Kemono Friends fan here. I loved S1 and would put it in my all time top 10 series. I especially liked Serval. I still re-watch episodes occasionally.

On the other hand, I regret wasting my time on S2 and would prefer to forget it exists. I don't care if it's officially canon, it will never be to me.

A lot of series go this way, starting out great and selling out after becoming profitable. The same thing happened with Fate and Madoka, which have already been discussed in this thread. It was just especially bad with KF.

Some of it's scary, but describing it makes it a lot less scary. But it's less about the fear factor for most and the writing, the lost-footage one where a team accidentally stumbles into an alternative reality where all living matter is devoured ending with them nuking themselves when they stumble upon a still live strain to keep it from escaping into the real world got shivers up my spine. Not because it's a massively unique idea or because it was written like a Stephen King novel, but it was written well enough to make me actually feel something negative like that in the first place. There's god knows how many writers of varying quality and endless examples of stuff ranging from good (the SCP that turns itself into what it perceives is the scariest thing, aka being force-fed C-list horror movies instead of Godzilla) to shit (the plague doctor rewrite) and everything inbetween without breaking into any of the non-english ones (the SCP that can only kill with no form if it's unknown so it gets turned into a totally homogenized anime character) but that's not really related to the topic at hand and I don't really want to de-rail over something that's incredibly subjective in the first place. Still recommend giving arai-san's mansion a try though.
