I didn't care for it and I honestly felt like I was pushing myself through it instead of just enjoying it. I recognize people have their own taste and preferences, but I just dont see what it is that people like so far. It's mediocre at best. I know its the first chapter and it'll probably get better, but I loved the first chapter of Higurashi and Umineko. This just feels so weak and meandering like it doesnt know whats its going for. All the characters are just there. The events that unfold have no impact except during the last half hour. The actual story seems cool, except you only see bits and pieces of it burried beneath vapid character interactions. The music is alright but nothing really memorable yet, might need to listen to the OST again. Art is good, exception being the terribly out of place animated gifs. I just can't bring myself to care for it. I'm hoping that phase 2 will help me to, because at this point, all I've gotten out of reading phase 1 is remaining up to date in discussions and adding another an entry to my vndb.

The worst part of my Rose Guns Days experience was that I was "spoiled" that it had "loops", so I expected everyone to die and then for it to loop in every season while reading it.

Since reading Higurashi I have come to learn and enjoy those "vapid" moments when the characters interact in a seemingly useless manner. It may feel pointless but without those I wouldn't have remembered Higurashi when things went south, same in RGD. As for Umineko, they were vital as well considering they gave you information on the characters' traits and personalities, providing you with material and knowledge to actually try and solve the mystery. I won't deny that Ryukishi often has issues with pacing or walls of peace but in my opinion, if done well, this is a strength.

Typically I would agree, I loved those moments in Higurashi, but it felt like you were getting to know the characters and being immersed in that atmosphere, but Ciconia just seems to lacks all of that. Which is why I wont refer to the same kind of scenes in Higurashi or Umineko as vapid, they had something to offer. Not to mention that oftentimes it also stealthily drove the narrative.

The first third of Phase 1 was the most enjoyable, and that was when it those "vapid" character interactions made me feel something and were fun to read. But after that it just falls apart and it truly earns the title of vapid. They became annoying and just a chore to get through. The walls of peace is an obvious example. They broke from the fun and more carefree character interactions, but at the same time--never embraced the more serious and in-depth. It remained in the middle of those two emotions until the very end, and it's just dull and uninteresting. Balancing those two emotions doesnt mean remaining inbetween them, it means shifting between them in an interesting way that adds to the characters, something Phase 1 just failed to do, for me at least.

One test I gave myself was trying to describe the characters. Take Higurashi and Umineko for example, you can describe the personalities pretty well after the first episode/chapter. Umineko is especially relevant in this regard as there are a lot of characters just like Ciconia. Now try Ciconia, most of the cast is just... there. I can maybe describe a few, and even then I'm really pushing it. The majority of scenes with them just fail to add anything to, or build on, them. For a lot of them, it felt like r07 assigning lines to a character instead of that character talking as themselves. I dont like comparing titles and always returning to Umineko or Higurashi, I'm just trying to use them as example to help better demonstrate what I'm trying to convey.

I'll give you some theory behind what is being called "transphobia".

There is a normalcy, how things normally are in our species. And there are deviations. And some deviations are useful for our success, and some aren't.
So normal things are normal, good or bad. Back pain is kinda normal, because of how our spine is set up, bipedalism isn't what its made for. So its not really a disease, its normal. Its expected. And if something is abnormal, but has good outcomes, like very high intelligence, thats a gift. Or being very pretty, or having a nice voice, those are gifts, they are useful abnormalities.
Abnormalities that aren't useful are diseases. If you are different than normal, and this difference has bad outcomes on your life, it is a disease. If the disease is behavioral, it is mental illness. Transsexuality is a mental illness. It makes it less likely for you to reproduce (biological imperative), and it makes you less likely to fit and belong in society (civilization imperative). It is a bad mutation, it is something you want less of in your society.
What we do with ill people is accommodate them to the best of our ability, without ruining things for their sake. So with the blind, we may put some tiles on the sidewalk with bumps, so they can feel their way forward with their feet; or put a beeper on the traffic light, so they can hear when its time to cross. But we won't change society so drastically as to make it inconvenient for the normal, seeing people. We accommodate the blind as much as is reasonable, out of pity. We do similar things with the handicapped, putting rails on stairs to the park, or elevators on places that don't necessarily need them, so that their wheelchairs can get up. But we don't go out of our way to do this everywhere and for everything.
The problem with transsexuals today is that they demand more than is reasonable in terms of accommodation. The demands are for more than pity could afford them.

Transsexuals in addition to wanting more than is reasonable in terms of societal acceptance (and more than other groups of ill people get), also demand that their condition be taken as a gift. That their disability be celebrated. This creates several problems.
1. Young children who don't have their condition may seek to induce it, because they begin to think it is cool and an identity they can take on. This is already a problem among some mildly mentally ill people, who may cause blindness to themselves, because they identify as blind. We need to stop this. Disabilities should be accommodate, so that people who suffer them can pursue happiness, but they should NOT be promoted. They aren't desirable. Blindness, transsexuality, these illnesses aren't desirable, and you want as little of them as possible. It is a pity, and it is a sorry thing, that such people exist. We do what we can to ease their existence, but we should not promote their propagation.
2. This culture of more-than-acceptance creates situations where bad actors can hijack the shields and protections given to the ill for their own purpose. Healthy people (as much as a sexual predator can be called healthy) may fake the illness, say transgenderism, for their fetishes. What is a crime for a normal person in the eyes of society, like using the wrong changing room or toilet, is not a crime if they suffered from transgenderism. So suddenly there are extra rights, and a sort of prestige, associated with the condition. Thus people will fake the condition to gain these. This is undesirable, because in a fraudulent way it creates more transgendered people (which is undesirable as per pt. 1), and because it allows people to act in a way that society doesn't want them acting.

3. Mental illnesses frequently come in bundles, as is well documented. I don't know why, perhaps some genetic mutations are shared between them. At any rate, transgendered people frequently are also sexual predators, and suicidal, and so on. But if we consider that being transgender is a positive thing, a gift and not an illness, suddenly we are calling people who likely host mental illness gifted, and celebrate it. This again causes problems in society, because we want when 2 people meet in the street each of them to have the knowledge that the other is a rational actor and a moral person. If you are being told that there are mentally ill people among us, its a choice, there are millions of them, they are just like us, etc, you can't just assume people you meet are sane. This breaks confidence and trust, and people end up suspecting each other, which ruins social cohesion and productivity.

Basically I am saying:

I support such treatment, diseases should be fought, illnesses should be cured. Just don't celebrate it. Cancer patients celebrating their cancer are crazy. Don't be crazy.

I just finished Phase 1 and I don't know what to say...

It was okay, I guess.

The setting is there, on the paper it sounds like the most interesting one out of the big three and it very well may be. The first part of the game, where you learn about the world the political structure of the game and such was certainly the best part of the story. You get to meet all these cool looking characters, but they really don't get fleshed out that much, so you don't care about them and whatever character development between each other they get, it quickly gets forgotten ( Jayden and Meow or Gunhild to give a few examples. ). The second part is the worst one by a mile, you get all that talk about being the comrades and protecting the walls of peace together, but since you don't care about the characters, it feels meaningless in the end. Let's be honest, has anybody actually cared about Lingji's death? I didn't.
The last half an hour or so truly felt like the start of the game, it also had my favourite scene from the whole Phase - The soldiers holding hands and singing christmas songs, while pretending to not notice the tens of deaths caused by each other, this one scene felt much more impactful, than all the talks about being comrades mixed together . The ending also left me intrigued, especially the scene with Chloe basically killing Lilja. Now, onto the few characters:
The Kings felt lile generic anime villains whose moments were solely carried by the Jestress. I am aware of the fact that we don't know much about them at this point and many things regarding them will change as soon as we get more Phases, but for now, they're boring. Beatrice had much more character and charm as the main antagonist even only considering 1st Episode into play.
Miyao as a main character is good, but still has room to grow. He's a naive youngster who believes that everything will be fine as long as everyone hold hands together, it's fun seeing him deal with whatever logs life throws at him. The program and his whole existences really makes Miyao that much more interesting and shrouds him in darkness, that not even he has knowledge about. I like that we're uncovering the truth alongside him. I'm excited to see what they will do with him later.

That's all I have to say as of now, I know nobody's gonna read it, but it's nice to be able to arrange everything in my head about the series so far.

Yes, one of the main problem with my Ciconia experience that in the end I didn't really care about most of the cast. I think 24 characters was too much to handle here even with prioritizing few over others. I think only Koshka's possible death made me sad a little. Also, somehow "everybody is spy" thing (4 spies from 3 kings, blue Jayden, possible blue Linji) kinda ruins the mood, can't explain why tho.
And yes, Three Kings are just meh, I wouldn't be able even distinguish their lines if there were no speaker headers. (Same problem is for non-main characters from kettes)

Try Higanbana. You can read one chapter and it kinda feels like a self contained story imo. The first night does feels like a good ending. If you like more after than then keep at it and then do Higurashi. I haven't gotten to RGD, Umineko, and Ciconia but so far it's all amazing.

Kanon is the best Key VN. I kinda like it more than Umineko, but it's probably just nostalgia. The atmosphere is extremely comfy.

Unteralterbach is really fun if you are into the pedo subculture (for lack of a better word) and get the obscure references. Not very relaxing, though, since there is a lynch mob bad ending awaiting you at every corner. It's still the best western VN.

Shibuya Scramble is definitely fun and very unique.

I just didn't like Lucia's character very much and her route doesn't fit in well with the others, you can tell that it was written by someone else. Also it's just a bit cheesy and not really that interesting, nothing I haven't seen done better elsewhere.

Most of it was cool, but the epilogue sequence - that is everything after Kotarou convinced Akane to come to the shelter - left a really bad taste in my mouth. It feels really defeatist, though I don't think that was the problem, it's that it felt like it's proud about being defeatist, like it embraces defeatism. "Humanity's fucked, the remaining humans are gonna have shitty lives, these two are getting banished innawoods, and that's A-OK!". It's just way too dark for me, which that says a lot. Not a lot of works depict depressing situations in a positive light and I don't think I'm a fan of it.
