The more monolingual you make it the better but you also have to get your foot in the door somehow. More exposure to the target language by any means really is better at almost all times. The ideal thing is to think about the japanese youre reading or hearing in more japanese. Try to get familiar with words and have feelings towards them, emotions and words are very powerful for understanding.

I have been learning Japanese for 4 years. Today was the first time I have ever spoken Japanese in my life!

Hello!

I have been learning Japanese for a while. Focusing solely on vocabulary, grammar, and immersion. I had great results so far. JLPT is not exactly my goal. But I have studied grammar and words up to N3, and I can read slice of life manga and articles about things I am passionate about.

Recently, I have decided that I want to improve my speaking/writing abilities too. I looked around and signed up for italki as everyone seems to recommend actually speaking to improve speaking.

I paid for two trial sessions by two different teachers. The two that I have contacted wrote that they will teach Japanese in Japanese so I had a reason to push myself. I was expecting 100% to not be able to say a freaking word. I mean I have LITERALLY NEVER said anything in Japanese before -repeating anki words while studying doesn't count-. Although I say my comprehension level is around N3, I believe my speaking is below N5.

Anyways, I contacted the teachers, told them about my level and what I want to do. They kept complimenting my writing and calling me 上手 -classic Japanese lol-. I don't think they were exactly trying to make me feel good as all the sentences I have used were very basic.

Once the class started, I was able to hold a conversation for the whole half an hour! I didn't even say a word in English -except loan words-. I made a lot of mistakes and spoke very slowly. But I can't believe that I actually did it! one teacher kept saying that I am really good. The other said that I am probably around N4 in speaking which is not very far from my comprehension level!!!

Of course, we made plans on how to improve further. One teacher -the one that keeps saying how jouzu I am- said that I don't have to do anything really as I don't have an accent. She said to just continue speaking as much as I can. The other one was very helpful. She took notes of a couple of grammatical points I kept messing up and said maybe we could focus on them. Both of them were very patient and pleasant to speak with, corrected obvious repeated mistakes -I kept saying 一つ for people instead of 一人-, and very encouraging. One of them asks me questions and waits for my answers, while the other makes me speak a lot then ask me when I have nothing else to add/get stuck.

All in all, italki was very fun! of course, I am still new to this whole thing. I am free for the next couple of months, so I am really looking forward to seeing how much can italki improve my production abilities.

in my experience, my ability to understand monolingual definitions in japanese came about more or less as a result of having done quite a fair amount of reading practice with visual novels and light novels (which more or less got me used to both literal descriptions and to common vocabulary used in them), as opposed to magically having this monolingual dictionary definition reading ability pop up through some kind of elaborate monolingual transition process.

I'm really decided to fully learn freaking japanese in order to understand Tanya's anime without any subs, read the manga, the books, the freaking doujinshis and every other material that could be out there.
Have been watching anime for so many years, crap. I don't even remember what anime was the first I watched. Of course, I'm able to understand various dialogues of any anime episode due to the amount of time I've been watching this kind of stuff. But, obviously, this is not enough.
I'm looking for an appropriate way to process all the "raw" japanese material that is stored in my head.
By the way, I already know kana so that won't be an issue. I learned it time ago, and haven't really "used" it since then, so I'll have to review them a bit, but I'll be fine, I guess.
What's next? Flashcards? Kanji? Or do I just jump into hell with a dictionary?

Having passed the N5 in 2013, I continued studying on-off throughout the years. I was mainly revising Genki 1 again and again. Finally, a month ago or so I decided to actually sit down and do something with the language.

I did a bit of research on resources and changed the way I study. My main issue is listening and speaking (the latter is not needed for the test).
