matt once said that flashcards can hurt you by tricking your brain into thinking uncommon words are more common than they actually are just because they have a certain meaning. for example defaulting to using 送信 in conversation instead of 送る
i think this problem applies in another way too. tricking your brain into thinking the dictionary definition of a word is enough to understand how its really used. so you end up assuming 先に and 前に are interchangeable just because they can both translate to "before" or mixing up 正直 and 素直 because they can both translate to "honest"

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Japanese. The wordplay is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of core 6k most of the sentences will go over a typical reader's head.
