My cat would escape when we went on vacation (distressing the people we left to look after him) and show up as soon as we came home. This didn't work so well when we took him to someone else's house to be looked after ;_; he never came back.

He also brought us food when the person he must have decided was the provider was away. Not whole mice or birds, just the 'nice' juicy-looking bits.

When I was younger, I had a cat that bit my parents when I was sniveling about them putting antiseptic on a scrape.

My imouto got a ferret the other day. It's pretty cool.

Cats establish a partnership where all parties are aware of the deal.
I provide food, he endures when I want to pet him. If it's cold, he will look for me and warm each other.
He will demand to be fed, but won't steal from our food or hunt, except for the thrill.

It's a fair contract, and that's all there in the open. Not being sneaky or pretending to be nice when we want to be left alone. Not being a hypocrite.
Also, every cat has his own personality. You can get another, but it will never be the same.
