learning a european language feels pointless because of how similar the languages and cultures are to one another. there's more world renowned authors from germany than japan but g-e translations are generally of higher quality than j-e so i'd rather just read the g-e translation than learn german. and german culture is way more similar to mine so there's less novelty in it.
