So, /jp/, I've been watching "Casshern"(film version) this morning(it's nearly 4 in the morning), and I'm waiting for megavideo to let me watch the rest. I'm about halfway through and I must say it's possibly the most incredible film I've ever had the opportunity to watch.
Seriously. less than Five minutes into the film I thought to myself: "This just might be the best film I've ever seen." and halfway in it seems a pretty good assessment.
Anyone else really like this film?

I haven't seen the film, though I enjoyed the show.

I've heard it's not very good, but I haven't seen it, so ¯\(º_o)/¯

The only thing I know about that movie is that it was directed by Utada Hikaru's ex-husband.

That and I hear it's bad.

He's a dragon that battles other dragons. Pretty obvious.

>> No.2340849

It's very over the top, has a ham-handed anti-war message, and tries too hard to be artsy.

Not a bad movie, but far from great. Interesting SFX.

heard it sucked, never watched it

As far as i remember, it was okay. Nothing special. Its been years since i last saw it.

ALright. Finally finished the film and it's damn near 6 AM. I'm surprised how underappreciated it is.
I wasn't such a big fan of the last 20 minutes or so of the film and it felt unresolved and openended, but overall I still say it's definitely one of the best films I've ever seen, perhaps even THE best.

Different tastes etc.
I prefer deep movies and other intellectual stuff that makes me look smart.

>> No.2341176

>>2341158
It was a very intellectual movie when you think about it. It just requires that you look at every aspect of it, and read between the lines when it comes to the story. The way I interpreted it, the message is less what is said than what is implied by what is said, and how it's juxtaposed with what is and isn't happening.
Yes, it has a strongly anti-war bias, not that that's bad or good, it's just an idea behind a larger idea, that idea being that humanity is more than the ideas of good or evil, black and white. The idea that we exist in ourselves, for ourselves, for our selfishness and selflessness all at once. That violence is an expression deeper than humanity, comparable to love, Love and hate being two sides of the same coin. That contradiction in co-existance is the essence or harmony and life.

At least, that's a small part of what I draw from the ideas of the film and story.

>> No.2341184

Good god, take off your weeaboo goggles. This is easily one of the worst films ever made.

I watched up until the whole Robot uprising part and just switched it off. It's terrible and you are terrible for liking it.

I thought it was a very interesting movie...and if you compare it with Hollywood, of course you're going to see a difference. There aren't really any other places with as much production power.

The ending was just a huge WTF, though. Everything leading up to it was so dramatic, and then the movie just went "poof."

I haven't seen the film, personally, but what you've synthesized for us here is more or less what one could pull from nearly ANY piece of media with any pretensions towards an ethical, humanistic or humanity-affirming message. The content of its thematic or thetical message(s) doesn't necessary confirm or ensure the aesthetic or artistic success of the film, nor does it promise that the articulation, development or treatment of these messages is carried out deftly. Ideally, the thematic underpinnings of a work should be dealt with with sufficient intellectual sophistication so as to effect the problematization (or at least intimate it) of what otherwise would be its principal ideological vector.

I'm not a weeaboo, and I rather take offence to that statement.
I am neither obsessed with japan nor do I want to be japanese. I'm white and damn proud of it.
Still, I enjoyed watching Casshern. I've been wanting to see it for some time and found the concept interesting. I do feel that around the ending of the film the plot just went to shit and everything stopped making sense, but it's still one of the most visually stunning films I've ever seen with one of the most interesting messages I've ever seen, delivered in one of the strangest ways I've ever seen.
I liked the film. I thought it was a good film, especially compared to all the shit hollywood puts out these days. As an aspiring writer and director I rather despise the generic and predictable shit that hollywood has settled into, and Find myself hard pressed to find a movie I really, truly enjoy watching, thus, finding a movie such as casshern that manages to feel both original and interesting(I have not seen the anime series, so the film is still original to me), makes me feel rather ecstatic. If you don't like the film, fine, but there's entirely no need to insult me for liking it.

hurr durr, you are liek so unique. With radically rare free thinking like that you're definitely sure to go far.

...If you swoon in this manner over fairly mindless trash like Casshern, you clearly do not watch enough films or have the faintest idea what you are talking about.

I admit I haven't seen Casshern, so I don't mean to compare the two, but... Avalon is quite possibly one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Even Matrix, as bad as it was, had at least some entertainment value. Avalon was just ugly and pointless. Something mysterious and unexplained happening in virtual reality might have been a valid storytelling idea 40 years ago when it had at least some novelty value, but not now. Now it needs some goddamn substance.

I can't understand why you'd think like that. I think it was the most melodramatic overdone piece of crap on serve at the movie festival the year it came out.

Visually impressive though, but every character in the movie took about ten minutes to die while coughing last words.
