This, totally this. It also doesn't help if the arc you are going through has characters you don't like as the heroine.
I struggled to get through HF because I just don't like Sakura. Which is not to say that there wasn't much win to be found in that scenario, it's just that the pacing sucked, even compared to the other two scenarios.
First it was rolling along a good pace, offing servants left right and centre, then Saber get's eaten, and the whole thing slows down to a crawl. It takes me two whole days of clicking until I get to rescuing Iyla, which is the point where the shit get's awesome again.

Admittedly after this point there's massive amounts of win to seen, but that big boring drought in the middle made the whole scenario feel like such a chore.

You know that you haven't had the best VN experience when the person you found most awesome in the entirety of the scenario is the guy who only get's three lines in the Good End and no picture.

But then again, I guess that's just Zelretch for ya'.
