So many rules are broken that I'm convinced he must have gotten a lot of negative feedback about it. The end of Umineko, with the "think about WHY the rules are broken" bit (one of the Featherine bits, I think) feels like a direct rebuttal to complaints I might have made.

The rule that's broken most to the detriment of the reader, in my opinion, is the taboo rule 5: "No Chinaman must figure in the story." I'm pretty sure that what Knox was pointing at with this rule, but didn't explicitly lay out, is a character so alien to the reader that the writer does not bother justifying their actions. If such a character is present in the story, the reader can't make any sure judgements about motivation because the author might be relying on a bullshit, un-foreshadowed explanation based on that character's background.

Fucking red herring notebooks made me explicitly discount her as a possibility.

To be fair, Higurashi and Umineko had a lot of repetition, talking in circles and unnecessarily long scenes that could've used an editor. I kinda enjoy those overly drawn out scenes because they are immersive, but they can drag the pacing a lot and don't really go anywhere.

Ryu said that Ciconia Phase 1 was like the entire question arcs crammed into one. It was super long and also had (IMO) really good pacing like RGD. Sure, walls of peace, but every scene had a clear purpose and got to the point without talking in circles about the same piece of exposition for 30 minutes. It's really well-paced.

If the other phases are this long or even longer, it would be great. There is no need for 8 episodes if the pacing is good and there is a massive amount of content in each one.

I definitely agree that Takuji's chapter was the one that best approached the character's sexuality, Kimika included, but I'd also argue that it's the only one that did so satisfactorily, and the rest of the chapters have an awkward relationship with their main characters' sexuality.

I guess that's true, but Yuki is literally his perfect waifu archetype. It makes sense that her sexuality is kinda shallow and idealized. She's lowkey lesbian because that's hot but also slutty and wants Tomosane's dick without him having to do anything to win her over. She's the dream girl any loser wishes for.

Tomosane.... At first I thought he was a faggot in denial because he kept exaggerating his disgust towards faggots. But he was actually a pedo in denial until he stopped being in denial. It's weird because I usually find pedos in denial fucking annoying in VNs (except in Unteralterbach, because it's a parody and Bernd's denial is exaggerated on purpose). But Tomosane wasn't too bad about it, he just didn't want anything to do with Hasaki in general for other reasons.

Takuji was both hilariously over the top and extremely relatable. His worldview is fucking bonkers and, to a normie, he probably reads like an exaggeration/parody of the typical perverted otaku loser. But nothing about his character is exaggerated at all. He's spot on. And it hurts how much I relate to this miserable fucker.

The older I get, the more I appreciate all the good in life and feel empathy for people who are having a rough time. But a side of me is still incredibly bitter and constantly struggling with sociopathic thoughts.
