>> No.2324846

No, he's right. This is the nuclear fusion reactor at JET in Europe. Torus refers to a donut shape, to be imprecise, and is used in fusion reactors as it is impossible to have a magnetic field in a simply connected region whereby the magnetic field lines do not intersect the boundary, which would result in loss of energy.

>> No.2324885

Fusion and fission are very different. For one thing, we only have enough uranium to power the world by fission alone for several hundred years, maybe a thousand if you use breeder reactors to reprocess the uranium waste, whereas for fusion you can get the deuterium from ordinary seawater, and the Earths supply of fuel alone should give us enough energy to last hundreds of thousands of years at current levels.

Add on to this the problem of waste. Fission produces a lot of radioactive waste, which decays very slowly, whereas fusion is incredibly clean. It's byproducts have a half-lives of at most a decade, i.e. their radioactivity halves every 10 years, whereas with fission there are products with half-lives of around half a million.

And finally for safety- any kind of breach in the reactor for fusion will cause the temperatures to drop, and the reaction to stop, meaning that accidents are incredibly unlikely, and it is incredibly easy to control, whereas fission is a lot harder to control (though with modern safety systems, there is almost no chance of a fission plant accident anyway).
In conclusion, fusion > fission, and it will be a great boon for humanity when we finally get it producing net energy.

Well, they are putting a hell of a lot of FUD out about this, and presumably lobbying world leaders in secret. Every so often you'll get a politician vomit out a load of crap about nuclear power. But JET hopes to almost break even in terms of power in/ power out, and should provide the foundation of knowledge for a larger reaction to be produced which will provide an energy return from fusion.

It'll be at least 20 years until we see the first prototype fusion reactor producing energy come online. After that the oil companies will really pump money into their astro turfing campaigns to scare the public, their work is half done for them with the whole "nuclear = bad bad bad" idea. By then we'll probably already be shit out of options though, so we'll thankfully be forced to build some, which will be able to provide a demonstration of how clean, efficient and useful fusion is.
