Anon, you have to side-step that and go for something where this is actually the point and makes the series actually charming. Try アオイホノオ which is full of super over the top acting and comedy but it's all just so funny you won't mind. I can also wholly recommend the manga it's based on if you are interested in anime/manga subculture of 70s and 80s.

>>23237537
the chinese pronunciation is apparently the least common. 大辞林 doesn't give any usage examples for it unlike for the japanese pronunciation. so if you really want to make a card, まどろみ is your choice.

>> No.23237633

>>23237537
i think this is just yet another example of how shitty and inconsistent kanji spellings are because of the lack of any sort of official standardisation.

you'd expect that 微睡み would be correct since まどろみ is obviously just the nominalized form of 微睡む, but none of the j-j dictionaries i use list that spelling. they all say まどろみ is 微睡 with no okurigana (though my IME disagrees and gives only 微睡み).

there's precedent for 微睡み being correct in the form of 微笑 vs. 微笑み / 微笑む (coincidentally, same initial kanji as in 微睡/微睡み/微睡む). 微笑 is never read as ほほえみ and always uses the 音読み 「びしょう」 instead.

I think we agree mostly. We're arguing about degree. Someone who studied Greek culture and has a broader understanding of what was going on at the time, is most likely going to have a better understanding and ultimately provide a better experience when communicating about said text.

I would say you can definitely discount a lot of nonsense as uneducated, and you can absolutely critically acclaim one piece of work over another. It happens all the time in the real world. It doesn't mean that the widely-accepted version is the best, but again, law of averages definitely favor one version over another. A random crackpot on 4chan isn't likely to have a better understanding over cutting edge experimental physics compared to researchers with post-docs working in the field. It's possible, but extremely unlikely.

In other words, I'm pretty sure I'm going to take the average opinion of say 20 native Japanese people about the meaning of a work rather than you. You might be right about something a lot of Japanese people were wrong about, but law of averages and probabilities say you're probably "fucking wrong about most shit".

There's a reason why they only hire natives for translation work for really super important documents. In the real world, like you're talking about, natives get precedence. Governments aren't hiring people who don't speak languages that well for translation purposes because they think it'll result in a good translation.

Again, don't let this take away from your fun. But it doesn't make you "right", and it definitely doesn't give you magical insight into what a group of natives would most likely feel or think about a said work.

Again, there's a problem with degree here. You're arguing about the Odyssey. You're right that Greek scholars produce useful work because they put in the effort to do so, but let's say I have """Homer""" in front of me, transported through time. Am I going to take a scholar's word over Homer's? A scholar might have something useful to add, but there's no question Homer will provide the canonical analysis.

We have natives. They provide the canonical understanding of the language. Language is a tool for communication. You might have something interesting to say here and there about a work, but if you're not native yourself, and you haven't interacted with any natives, you're going to pale in comparison to the real thing.

Now you can argue it might matter how much a non-native studies compared to a native, and other related problems, but again you can point to law of averages, and let's be honest, you're probably doing a real shit job at learning Japanese if you haven't even spent more then 100 hours talking to a Japanese person.

Trying to claim that you have a worthwhile or intellectually useful opinion about critical literary analysis of a work, when numerous natives exist, and when you make no effort to communicate with said natives, is not only self-serving, but again, the height of hubris.

You might have fun, you might have some viewpoint that other people find fun, but you're not sharing in the communication process.

>> No.23240219

>>23240197
not sharing in the communication process = not understanding the work.

you might understand part of it, but probably not a lot of it, and you're probably not doing a good job

also i didn't say without having lived in japan, i said without interacting with natives.

is it possible to learn japanese without ever interacting with natives? sure, anything's possible on 4chan

is it likely? maybe on the same level as a Boltzmann brain.

i'm just saying that people who don't interact with natives are having fun, but they're not "understanding" the work (in the sense that they can provide any critical or useful analysis) when compared to natives themselves (especially natives that aren't retards)

give me one example of a thing that's hard to understand that could be understood by simply watching natives talk to each other about that same thing. what is the special element that comes from your own participation in the conversation? it sounds like you're talking about some magical thing to me. it's even easier for people nowadays to learn languages without interaction because there's an endless stream of native writing and video on any given topic which is not the case for ancient cultures

1. if i say, 部屋着 what is the general definition, why is there a specific word for 部屋着 and what wouldn't constitute 部屋着. what image comes to a japanese person's mind when 部屋着 is mentioned.

2. let's pretend someone's character is developed in a given vn by the way the speak (which is common in any literary work). you can infer certain things about a character (foreshadowing by the way the speak). what cultural implications would you draw from someone who says ラインの複数人トーク?

3. a man is jogging through a residential district in loose pants with no shirt on, with headphones in listening to music, they seem to be sweating. what would a japanese person think about what this person was doing?

i should mention that any of these things a japanese person would think of immediately and have an idea of what's going on, but someone who never interacts with natives would probably never think of "the implications"

you're correct, but no one is going to watch a video on everything they need to know.

being in japan, or interacting with people forces you to know a lot more stuff whether you want to or not.

doing things at your own leisure is not likely going to provide accurate japanese

proving this is not really an easy task, but i mean if you're honest with yourself (which you're obviously not), you'd be able to say, "hey i wouldn't have known this shit off the top of my head if i saw it randomly in a vn or drama or some bullshit and there was no obvious attention drawn to it"

anyway, there's no point in continuing because your argument is literally that you're smart enough to learn an entire language by being so careful you can figure everything out without any external source of verification (natives)

i mean it's really ridiculous when you think about it, the learning process requires peer validation, you can never be sure you're right, and one mistake could easily cascade into tons.

considering it's all information i learned through communication, it would by definition all be stuff i learned talking to natives online (before i even came to japan), considering i got here, uhh... like a couple months ago? but i've been talking to japanese people online for like 10 years.

>>23240782
i know they can't because i speak enough japanese to verify if they understand the english
they don't.
i was with a japanese person today, some indian dude walked up to us in the supermarket
japanese person i was with has a teaching degree and studied english

she couldn't understand a basic conversation about this dude not being able to eat sugar and whether sugar was a written ingredient

anyway enjoy your vns, i don't really give a fuck, and i'll probably come back to 4chan another year from now to see what's up again

>> No.23240829

>>23240806
>i've been talking to japanese people online for like 10 years
so basically you've been exposed to a lot of japanese and you think it's the communication specifically that taught you these stuff. if you just read vns for 10 years instead you'd probably have the same level of info you're just privileging your own experience. if you actually answered my question properly you'd realise there's no answer to it that doesn't rely on "talking about some specific situation" which can be replicated by media

>> No.23240849

>>23240829
naw, i don't agree with that at all. after coming to japan, there's a lot of stuff that changed my opinion of the stuff even i thought i knew really well after spending 10 years talking to people and watching animu, and shitting around with you guys on /jp/ acting all snobby

having to come here and work at a real company, and i've already interacted with thousands of people, even going out to eat and going to peoples homes and all sorts of shit

what i thought i knew being "super careful" a lot of it was wrong. and it only makes sense that it was. no matter how careful you are, you're going to fuck up.

that doesn't mean you can't get to a good degree of accuracy, and there's some people that probably have really good innate language skill, but most people aren't going to be able to do it

>> No.23240854

>>23240829
also, just to say it vns don't even use the same japanese as normal japanese does

you're saying like people playing dnd are going to teach you normal english, it's kind of a joke.

so you've upgraded to saying we can't learn japanese unless we live in japan because we'll always be wrong about stuff. which is why im saying it doesn't matter because it's fine to be wrong as a non native as long as you enjoy what you're doing because you can get to a point where you understand it well enough for it to be personally fulfilling you don't actually need to go live in japan to understand VNs you just need to understand vns because as you said they aren't even representative of real japanese so why would real japanese people help you understand them?

>> No.23240934

>after spending 10 years talking to people and watching animu
that doesn't really say much about your actual level
the better you are at japanese before coming to japan the smaller the perceived benefit from living in japan is going to be
now i do believe there are some aspects that you really only internalize if you live in japan for a while but those are miniscule and you can get a fantastic grasp of the language without ever setting foot into the country

>> No.23240952

you can believe that all you want, but given that you admitted you don't talk to japanese people and never want to, and you've never been to japan (i assume because you've never talked to japanese people), at least i'm pretty sure you said that, i've stopped caring

your opinion is basically uneducated, and not worth very much

>> No.23240972

that wasn't me but i never said anything about being smart i don't actually think it requires intelligence to learn a language it just requires thousands of hours of comprehensible input, anyone can learn a language with that and the wider the variety of input the more likely you will learn various cultural elements too, it's just information exposure over years

>> No.23240983

>>23240972
i mean it's pretty simple
you think it's tons of input
i think it's tons of input + tons of output (in some form)
without output, you can't verify your understanding of the input
i think this is especially true when coming from a romance language to japanese, but since we have no way of proving each other wrong, and because i'm bored now, this seems like a good place to stop

i have nothing to do tomorrow so maybe i'll watch something, corona's basically shut a lot of shit down
