Fan-made Yume Nikki spinoff. It's about a girl named Urotsuki and the dreams she has, in a similar style to Yume Nikki. It's also largely incomplete, with only five effects available in-game out of a projected 58.

I dunno about that. That picture with all the effects on it seems more like a list of effects that -might- be made, not ones that -will- be made. A few of them seem kinda redundant. Why is there a bicycle and a motorcycle? Why is there a scythe and a reaper with a scythe?

that's not actually because it's a japanese folder. It's because your unzipping (unlzh most likely) software put unreadable characters in place of the japanese, likely because lzh or similar does not support unicode.

If it had unzipped correctly, into a true japanese filename, you would see boxes instead of text if you don't have japanese support, and it would run just fine.

He wrote a story, which apparantly won some amateur writers contest in Japan.

this is what i can remember of it (according to a 2ch anon)
1. he, as a child, for three years (7yrs-11yrs), he lived next to this half asian girl, they were more or less best friends
2. half asian girl was bullied for being half asian, and also for having a fairly loose grip on reality, apparantly, eg, invisible friends, believed in faeries, frequent nightmares
3. at the time, he pretty much distanced himself from her to avoid himself being bullied
4. so more or less, after 3 years of being friends, he started to ignore his neighbour
5. one day, her parents went on a trip, intended to leave her alone for 3 days or something...well, a length of time
6. he was still ignoring her at this point, apparantly he could hear her screaming at night (nightmares i assume), but he didn't do anything
7. half way through the second night, screaming started again, but stopped
8. next day, it's found out that she jumped off the balcony

that said, my theory is he made this game as a tribute to her, assuming this story is true.
apparantly the story had heaps of detail regarding when she told him of some of the dreams she had, and "introduced" him to her invisible friends, but that was never posted.
i assume said dreams and said invisible friends are manifest in the game.

Yume Nikki's images had coherence. They actually had unifying themes (like the Incan stuff) and felt more like it was all tied together and telling a story.

I think you have it backwards. It's already been said that Yume Nikki tells no story, we just like to interpret things that aren't there. However, I've been experimenting some crashes apparently relared to having installed the wrong rtp, which makes me believe the fix for that would be installing the recommended one.
The problem is, the thing is just impossible to install. As I launch the installer, it successfully unpacks the files, but then I get a message saying "Setup failed to launch installation engine: unregistered class".

>Intentional symbolism runs the risk of coming off as too heavy-handed and contrived.

Agreed, but difficult as it must be to mimic the original without seeming like a cheap copy, Yume 2kki is succeeding. After all, Yume Nikki had both heavy tones and random, strange ideas, but it's the random things that are most interesting. I don't care for the Hospital/Flowers/Graveyard connection theory. They're like Madotsuki's recurring Mayan/Incan themes; those are all on the surface, immediately after you fall asleep. The fantastic things are deeper. To me, the most interesting thing in Urotsuki's mind is the girl in front of the large organ who fears boys, and the room she was blocking that whites out soon after you enter, forcing you to wake up.

Local Writefag here. I was actually thinking of writing a Yume Nikki fiction on my interpretation of what causes the images in her dreams...from my perspective-

- Madotsuki's probably the daughter of a single father; mother may have died and he's a workaholic, leaving her alone. Mother might have committed suicide off a roof...idk.
-Monoko is a friend who has an issue with self-image
-Monoe...she doesn't do anything. I'm assuming that she might be a friend who recently died; that was Madotsuki's last image of her before her death.
-Poniko...I'm seeing her as a blond foreigner who's also a bully, and maybe the envy of Madotsuki. The glance she gives in game isn't very friendly. Her worst fear is darkness.
-Masada is a piano teacher and someone Madotsuki looked up to; but transfered to another city for his job by airplane.
-Toriningen gossiping school girls imo.
-Kyukkyu-kun...hell, no clue.

I was thinking of centering a fiction around these ideas...if anyone has any other input, I'd love to hear it. More fodder.

Yeah concerning her and the traffic light.....

Well there's a lot of negative emotions and symbols connected to travel, roads etc.
The dead guy on the road, the subway car with the creepy guy that takes you to the forest, the crashed subway car with the weeping creature that changed it's eye from red to green when stabbed and personally? Monoko looks like the victim of a traffic accident to me, the depressed stomach, splayed limbs and running eye could easily be an allusion to someone splattered by a car or some such. The hair powers are the weirdest in my opinion. Did you ever notice how somewhere near the NPS is a giant bloodstain, exactly similar to the one from the end of the game? I always thought that it hinted that there were multiple others who went through a similar experience to Madotsuki and ended up killing themselves, and somehow they are all mentally connected, so those who've already killed themselves come back into the dreamworld as the hair NPCs. Still thinking about what you said about Poniko.
I don't think she's afraid of the dark- it's more that she turns into something horrifying when you flip the switch.
I always thought of her as a friend that Madotsuki thought would turn on her, and also someone that she envied because of the blonde hair equip.
Or, maybe she already turned.
Point is, she was a friend at one point. Madotsuki knows what her room looks like.

I've never seen anyone do anything to the girl sleeping in the igloo. I can only get her to stir with the Cat effect. That or kill her.

Yeah, she must have entered her room at some point.
Well, my theory on Uboa wasn't that it was Poniko, but that it was something else that took over Poniko. If it was Poniko, I don't think it'd be a 1/64 chance that she'd change- unless something else had the chance of coming and taking over her.

What about that weird place, with water, weird background and sound that you go to when you hit Uboa?

Either way, it takes her place.
>If it was Poniko, I don't think it'd be a 1/64 chance that she'd change
It could still make sense.
The idea of Poniko turning on her is like a small thought at the back of her mind. Something she wants to deny, even.

Then why not turn to discussing Yume 2kki? If you ask me, Urotsuki seems way more messed up than Madotsuki, and her dream world seems to have more references to her social phobia.

BROTIP: in order to preserve the original name of these kinds of stuff, run 7-Zip in Applocale mode - not WinRAR.
I'm not sure why the lattle does that, but I guess that's because it uses unrar.exe to extract things. Maybe it would work if your whole system locale is in Japanese.

By the way, I had a crazy thought last night.

You know that room in the theater area that loops on itself? The one with the eyeball people? What if it's like the Lost Woods in Zelda, and it actually leads somewhere?

I don't think it does, but it might be something to look into.
