DJT is a Japanese language learning thread for lazy メイド that are interested in the language, anime, manga, visual novels, light novels and Japanese video games.

40 brand new words that you've never seen before is usually the limit for the average student. anything higher and you're looking at at least 4+ hours of studying minimum, and thats including pure review. it's only going to get harder as the old words start piling up again, they increase more than just linearly.

>> No.23026005

>>23025993
this. if you're trying to do more than 40 new words per day itll just make it so you never learn the words as well as you should, and take up more of your time in the short run and especially in the long run. 40 is optimal if youre super dedicated, thats 1,200 a month 14,600 a year and nothing to complain about, if you can actually keep it up, but anything past that is counter productive

Why MIA and all other "immersion" learning "techniques" (including things like AJATT) are retarded.

>They use the word "immersion" as their main learning method
Here is the thing. Immersion is LITERALLY learning. Saying that you "immerse" yourself to learn the language is the same as to say to learn to learn the language. So you already know that something like MIA or AJATT is already saying LITERALLY NOTHING about HOW you should learn Japanese.
>They are LITERALLY always anti textbook, but at the same time require you to read "only the necessary parts" in textbooks
Here is the biggest problem. You don't understand anything in Japanese if you start. Every MIA, AJATT, and other bullshit meme will either tell you to waste ten more years watching anime (and still understanding nothing) or blaming you as the problem for not being able to learn Japanese. You know, learning Japanese is only possible for the secret MIA/AJATT/... club, am I right, Reddit? ;-)
>The namefagging
This is the reason why shit like MIA, AJATT, and all those other memes exist. All those retards want to see THEMSELVES as a learning guru. They try to be THE JAPANESE GUY. It's more or less a way of saying JAPANESE IS MY LANGUAGE AND IF YOU WANT TO LEARN JAPANESE YOU HAVE TO JOIN MY MEME CULT. Every scientist knows that any "all in one package" for Japanese learning is just a cult for retards. It's just namefagging and nothing more.
>the guides of those meme Japanese language "acquisition methods" are either not finished or "always improving"
For example in MIA there's a big talk about those HOLY 5 (that's right. 5 like in "I need MY NUMBER BECAUSE IT'S MY LEARNING METHOD AND NO ONE ELSE'S") stages to become a god in Japanese. Oh btw stage 3 to 5 is "under construction" :P. It's always the same. BIG TALK about MUH PERFECT JAPANESE LANGUAGE LEARNING and in the end it's nothing.

So if all those memes are useless time wastes (or at least very questionable in their quality) then how can you learn Japanese as fast as possible without wasting time?

1. Before starting Japanese
>learn Heisig's RTK (with koohii stories) with Anki to know all Kanji
>after knowing all 3k Kanji with RTK learn all Kana

Now after you are actually finished with knowing the Japanese "ABC" you can actually start learning the language.

2. It's 日本語/国語 time
>main route
Use textbooks to learn basic, intermediate, and advanced Japanese (for learning vocabulary the 6k Anki deck should be even better than the textbook vocabulary, so only learn the 6k Anki vocabulary)
>site route
AND HERE IT IS. This is where everything else is. Your textbooks are like your "mother". Every time you don't know how to progress or need help you go to your textbooks from the main route. But every time you want to see more than your "mother" you can try whatever you want. Moe immersion approach, Visual Novels, games, anime, living in Japan, read Japanese cooking books. It doesn't matter. The site route is all about YOU. Where the main route is mandatory and you always have to "proceed" with textbooks from the main route, the site route is where you can test your knowledge and you are free to do whatever you want. You don't understand a VN or anime you want to right now? Just wait a few more months or years. Maybe the textbooks will exactly cover those things you want to know in the near future. Only look up stuff if you have finished your advanced books. If you try to look up stuff before you are on an advanced "textbook level" you will most likely just waste your time by looking up more than actually learning anything.

So now that you know that the textbooks are deciding your faith, you are maybe thinking about what textbook you should use. Just use textbooks which were endorsed by universities or use textbooks which are recommended by a lot of people. Itazuraneko and the Japanese language learning subreddit both have really good recommandations. After you finished your advanced textbooks you learn the rest like with any other language. Read a lot, speak a lot, and guess what, this time you actually don't use textbooks anymore because now you know enough to actually be able to figure out stuff on your own.

And that's it. Japanese learning is only considered hard because it takes such a huge amount of time to actually learn all those different stuff. For example Kaufmann said a good thing and that's that Japanese is really easy to learn after you get the hang of Kanji and Kana. It's a straightforward language with no real traps or randomness. Sure, the readings are a little fucked, and maybe the writing of the Kanji is questionable from time to time, but if you just look at grammar and how the language works it's maybe even one of the simplest languages to learn. The most important part is having fun and training your brain in something new to improve your learning capabilities for other stuff you have to learn in college/university/job.

meme cults are cults built around personalities, nothing else. doing nothing but rtk before anything else sounds pretty close to heisig cult status as well. you're better off by starting rtk and doing a bit, then doing some textbooks, anki the textbook vocab, if you have time leftover do some core 2k. continue all three at same time, and you should be good.

wrong, pic related. the innocent corpus number is the amount of times x word appears in whatever media they used to generate the list.

It's not that big of a deal for a beginner, and by the time it starts being a big deal, you'll have picked up on it by just having watched 1000000 hours of anime along with all the jap music.
Not too mention that japs will simply see you're a retarded gaijin and they'll just assume you don't know them, completely invalidating studying them if you want to be a retard.

there isn't much of a point. you could try to watch extremely easy stuff like mitsuboshi colors or shoujo shuumatsu ryokou and only make anime cards for sentences after you decipher them. do you have any vocab in the bank at all?

why doesn't it mention vncore when it's arguably the best deck for the target audience here
too many options on the grammar part and not clear enough on what "basic understanding" means, should be more like "read tae kim once or twice and try to follow everything what's going on but don't try to memorize shit"
should clarify that completing rtk, kklc, etc. is a complete waste of time and that the benefits of isolated kanji study can be achieved by only doing 100-200 kanji
the "start regularly consuming ..." point is redundant considering the last point and there's no reason not to start mining right after finishing the core deck
might also want to clarify that you don't have to be able to perfectly read hiragana and katakana like you would your native script within a week, a lot of beginners seem to misunderstand this
might also want to point out that the best type of media to start with is voiced media, especially stuff that you can easily look up words and mine from

This is an ad for an onsen resort. Can you help me with translating these sentences?

The one previous one goes like this I think: "Before we had been doing business somewhere else, but then we managed to aquire this wonderful land and we moved. We had luck. Wonderful land --- "

What is 宿の第? Is is read やどのやしき?It makes no sense to me "Premises of the resort, it is said that the conditions are location environment." ?

I also don't know what the following sentence is supposed to mean in this context: "First we we are able to acquire the best location/ First the best location was aquired"? Is it passive or potential form?

Also, what the hell is a 歩中? I couldn't find it in any dictionary and googling doesn't help either.

i didn't say all benefits
the main benefits of doing these things early on are getting used to what kanji look like, how similar ones may differ and the basic flow of stroke order
you can get those benefits without going very far, i'll concede that 100 might be too low but i also wouldn't go very far beyond 200

no it's all just a bit more complicated than that bro you can't just give instructions like that on grammar it doesn't work
learning grammar is a gradual process happening on both conscious and subconscious levels, there is nothing wrong with for example just consuming japanese and looking up as you encounter, or reading one tae kim article a day and then putting on anime episode and trying to recognize this or previous grammar structures, the things you could do is infinite and it's all valid too, there is no best way and that amount of ambiguity with the keyword 'basic understanding' is just right

first of all making a mining deck before working through a core deck is purely inefficient as you can work off all the words you will see the most right away
second of all i'm just saying after looking up the elements in the sentence you want to mine you should understand the sentence, otherwise you are basically just guessing what the word means and not really increasing your understanding of japanese
there is plenty you will understand with core vocabulary and basic grammar under your belt, and following these steps what you can understand will continually increase, it's that simple

>do you actually know anyone who got crippled by their own retarded mining decks?
obviously not but the point isn't that someone got crippled, it's just not to do something stupid when you could do something smart :)

software being distributed by the linux distribution's maintainers is the default for linux

>> No.23036222

>>23036190
software on linux is distributed by whoever is running your distribution, you generally don't just download random shit off the internet like on windows. basically not supporting at least the arch linux package means you don't support linux. and that's nothing new, except all development for anki is happening on linux lmfao. basically the problem is that anki uses specific, non-uptodate libraries in their source code so anki can't access its own dependencies and everything needs to be bundled with it. and it's not just libraries, anki comes bundled with specific versions of programs it uses, like mpv. even if you have mpv installed, anki comes bundled with its own version of mpv, which is only compiled for certain cpu architectures and fucks up audio on any cpu made before 2013. their answer to people dealing with those problems is just "fuck you use a old version from 5 years ago"

>> No.23036238

>>23036222
well but it seems impossible to guarantee support for every os for every version of software and even if anki uses the newest libraries it may break for someone for whom the old libraries work no? and it would be effort to rewrite the entire thing as well, but what i'm saying is that there are working distributions and that the official maintainer simply doesn't want to be bothered about them so what is stopping you from using such a third party distribution that has the correct version of mpv and works for you
