VNs are less tolerable because a lot of them just seem really childish. Have you ever actually tried to get someone to read a visual novel before? I could never get most people to read even the best VNs even if they've seen 1000 anime and manga. Some ones I've been trying lately: Chaos;Child, Sakura no Uta, Baldr Sky, Majikoi, Irotoridori no Sekai, Aiyoku no Eustia, White Album 2, etc. All considered very good and I've read 5-40 hours of each of those, but they just don't take themselves seriously enough most of the time and I can't really get into them. It'd take me a while to really get back into these uninspired moe schoolgirl plots that drip feed you interesting plot developments here and there. Subarashiki Hibi is one of the few ones that got me into learning Japanese, and was the first one I read in Japanese. It's fine to have young adult characters, but humans are more complex than stereotypes. Drama is my favorite genre but I can't seem to get into much of what the Japanese make anymore. I still think that when it comes to the top 10% of anime/jdrama vs. western TV shows and movies, the Japanese outdo the west, but past that point it's just pretty bad on both ends. And of course manga is great, I've just been spoiled by the great ones I've read already.

I'm about 40% thru VNcore 1250 but my retention is trash. I've been watching and reading native material every day for about a month now and looking up tons of stuff. Would it be a good idea to switch to mining words or would that stunt my progress? I feel like the context would help me remember things better but idk if I would be able to pick good words to mine since I'm still at a really basic level.

I average around 50% correct and sometimes find myself encountering and not remembering words I've been drilling. OTOH Words like 「遊ぶ 」and 「面白い」 pops up constantly in よつばと！ and I felt like I was able to remember them much better once I reached them in VNcore.

I tried 100 cards a few years ago before and gave up after 20 days or so. I actually remembered quite a bit after stopping but the reps were hell and I never want to see 900+ reviews two consecutive days in my life. That said the way I was working back then was very different and inefficient (retention was about 70% on a good run) so there was a lot to improve on. I stick with 60-80 cards a day now since the reviews are much more manageable, this way I get 85% to 90% retention. Another thing that I found is that if I stopped doing high loads and did reviews exclusively for a while my retention actually started to tank slowly despite the fact that there were no new cards being introduced. 300 cards a day is impossible in my opinion. You'd have to be incredibly diligent and well organized to even hit 50% retention. It might be easier to mine 300 cards a day if you read a lot but if you do something like core or sentence cards you're fucked.

To be fair with you I got very burned out with anki after that and took a pretty long break. I wouldn't recommend anybody try high loads, slow and steady wins the race there is no rush. I have a lot of free time nowadays and can do 60-80 well enough and I'm comfortable with how I'm progressing. I think the best thing you can do to improve your retention is to have a healthy sleeping cycle and do some exercise. I know this is a bullshit cure-for-all but I'm really unhealthy otherwise so it works like a miracle for me.

Ironically it's does me quite good with languages. Also I realized that I didn't answer your question completely earlier so: I learned how to use anki better. What I was doing then was pretty much default settings + core which was pretty grim. Now I do audio/video cards and mine whatever I come across that I could see myself using. but you have to convert the srt/ass files to .txt first, you can do batch conversion in subtitle edit. just open powershell or command prompt in the folder where ur txt files are and run it. it didnt work in powershell for me there were some errors.

1. he is an idiot, the show gives you a lot more information than him so when he dies for the third time and still hasn't figured out he went back in time despite the exact same things happening for the third time, you can't help but think of him as plain stupid without any deduction abilities
